Phase 3 colours help pls

Ok Ok... Were not all bright sparkies..

I was given the step down box from a building friend.. I was told! The pillar drill was 3 phase by the engineering company.. I don't claim to know what's step up or step down.. But, I'm also not too proud to ask, and learn.. I wrongly, as it appears, thought A and B went together.. Hands up, I was wrong.. And no I won't be hiding.. I prefer to make the most of everyday, help others where I can and learn as much as possible on the way..

have u definately got a 3 phase supply. if u havent u would need a 415- 440v phase converter as that motor wont be dual voltage

well if you are hoping to run a 440 3phase drill from a 110v transformer noods you will be scratching your head for a good while. if you don't have a 3phase supply your not gonna get the drill running unless you get one of these....

Which will be a socket that matches the 4 pin plug you showed earlier.

depends if his motor is duel voltage as in star or delta etc ?


I think due to it being American has given the impression of it being 110 3 phase !!!!
the yanks use 220volt 3 phase, I don't know how they wire it but it is 3 phase 220 overthere.

can you show us the plate a bit better on the motor, try to see if anywhere it shows the voltage on the motor itself.

then open where the wires go in the motor, do not disconnect anything, just take a pic and post it here.
this might be a motor that CAN run on 240 volt ? some can and some cannot. 3 phase is 415 + volts.

the yellow box is 110 volts, and don't chuck it away as it could come in handy for another motor down the line !!!!.


if you got the drill cheap enough, you might be better off looking around for just another motor that is 240 volt for cheapness.
converters to 3 phase are too bloody expensive for most of us.

Any help would be really appreciated.. Obviously I need to wire the plug end into a new plug to use in a knock down box.. I just don't know which colour go where

'm guessing this is what should be witted to it as it says 440 on the case.. If it is? I'm stuffed, as it won't fit my step down box..

I think this is not a wind up the guy genuinely thing and wants to try to wire this up to the 110 tranny
NOODS my friend this will not work, you need to leave well alone, I am not being disrespectful if you dont know the difference between the two, you should not be doing it and you will have problems.

he has and it is 440 v and 250v I think, but def 3ph
and there is no way it will run on single as he is expecting.

sorry noods didn't mean to be nasty or owt, there are a few options to get you sorted, you could get a 3phase inverter or you could get 3 phase installed, option 3 would be to get a single phase motor to replace the current one....

if the drill has a seperate motor fitted with a pulley and belt your best option would be to buy a single phase motor and a new belt to suit the length but u would have to measure the shaft size of motor and get the same speed. there generaly round 1450 rpm

I looked into this when I was looking for a drill as most for sale were 3 phase motors coming out of workshops.

Well sorry but there are not loads of three ph motors running on single, not without adaption etc
a dual voltage motor is 220/240 3ph and 440 3ph but are still three phases
star and delta are ways of wiring 3ph
and if you dont know that, you shouldnt be advising IMO.

or adaption with caps and the OP is not able to do that if he hasnt the knowledge to know the difference

Just to make it clear you potentially have three options:

1. 240v single phase from the wall to a 240v to 415v 1 to 3 phase inverter then to the motor.

2. 240v single phase from the wall to a 240v to 240v 1 to 3 phase inverter then to the motor but wired in Delta (motor dependent), these inverters are cheaper.

3. As said, swap out the mother for a 240v single phase unit.

FYI you domestic supply is 240v single phase only with two conductors and a earth. 3phase has three conductors and son earth.

This has just just happened in my head..

I purchased this so called "in good working order pillar drill " for £129 .. It's 6 ft high and weighs an absolute tonne..

Bargain, I thought, it's taken 4 solid weeks spare time to turn this drill around, everything was seized, rust everywhere, lift table gears mangled, threads stripped, levers sheared off etc etc..

Delivered via a horse box..

Now, it's mint! A guy offered me over a grand for it the other day.. I turned him down as I've become attached to it now.. The final stage was to wire it up.. NOT TOO BE.. Not my forte...

Cleaned up and working table..

Mangled gears!

Now, I'm off to find some strong pills... X NOODS

well now who is going to look silly after writing that.
you need to go look around and find out what your talking about before putting people down.
there are loads of people running 440 volt 3 phase motors on 240 volts single phase.
check some of these out if you don't understand how to do it.

that's just 1 bloke.
check out you tube and you can find hundreds of them doing it.
