So I have now checked the EGR solenoid again this time with a tube on the air connections to see if when powered the air actually flows through the valve. The connections are marked "vac" and "out" It did not. I would have expected to have been able to have blown through from "out connection to "vac" simulating the suction flow. Unpowered if I put the tube on the vac connection and suck there is flow through the valve. But no flow if I blow in that tube.

didn't say codes will tell him all what's wrong but he needs a starting point
by the sound of it his code reader won't connect hence he needs to try PP2000 to see if it will read the codes
by removing battery a few times he could have screwed with the BSI unit anyway
last one i did was fuel cap senser shorted to earth that stopped you getting to the BSI

not how it works on a bench hence PP2000 could tell you it was working or not insitu

Rather than spending what seems like a great deal of time and effort messing around with the EGR valve, why not just simply blank it off? If EGR valve is faulty that should cure the problem, but if it makes no difference you haven't wasted money on parts which arent needed.
If you carry on trying to pin the tail on the donkey with this one, taking advice from posters on forums who may in some cases know less about HDI faults than you, I would think you are going to spend a good deal of money with zero forward progress.
The best possible option with this car would be to put in back in same auction you bought it from, but failing that the next best option is to find a local diesel specialist and book it in for diagnostic check. This is going to cost £60-70, and there is a good chance you will then know exactly whats wrong with the car, and whether or not repair work is going to be cost effective or not.

As above. An example of this is a friend who has a diesel discovery with a fault, according to the internet it needed a new pump.He was just about to fork out the several hundred pounds to get a new one when I sugested he take it to a diesel specialist, turns out all it needs is an injector rebuild, parts will only be a few quid.

Either getting rid or visit to diesel specialist are really the only sensible options here. Unless the OP is already 100% certain of the answers to his own questions,how on earth is he going to be able work out which of the widely varying responses to his questions are worth taking seriously?

Chris, I did not realise those clamps unhooked(must learn to use my glasses!) I unclipped them after marking the pipes and found no carbon build up at all. The pipes were only slightly sooty so that's a bonus. The clamps went back on with a gentle squeeze with the vice. The time and effort is no object to me as I am learning and retired so it is well spent. The costs I am trying to keep to a minimum.
I joined the Peugeot forum and posted a thread asking for members who have the pp2000 reader kit. They have a list of people in the areas of the country who are willing to help. The closest to me is in Crewe, so I wrote him a pm asking for his help but his inbox was full and until he makes space I cannot contact him!
I would prefer to leave the car as standard. But blanking off the port does not stop the electronics working and as such if the valve does not work then, if it does indeed go into limp mode, if failed then that will not help I would have thought.

The way to resolve this quickly and most cost effectively is the diesel specialist, and to move away from the idea that experts on modern diesel engines are likely to reply to your forum posts and make the services of a specialist superfluous.
I would like to think that other specialist forums and their members are like the members on this forum who, like yourself, are willing to spend time in helping other members. I am a member of a Suzuki Jimny forum and those members are like this forum, very helpful where they can. I try to input where I can and offer help to those that are near to my area.
I joined the Peugeotforum and a chap on there reckons putting 12V across the solenoid might have scuppered it as he reckons the control of it might be by PWM which apparently stands for Pulse Width Modulation!!
Anyway, I have found that the "new" Cat does not fit due to the inlet elbow has been welded at the wrong angle which prevents the body of it sitting correctly in its cradle which means the support tags don't line up. I have spoken to the supplier and sent him it to sort out. You have got to love Ebay!

If the cat doesnt fit, why not get your money back? If the cat is faulty a hammer and big chisel will have it sorted relatively quickly and FOC...............
I have sent it back and he has said he will try to get another suppliers product or refund me. I would rather another but if push comes to shove I will try the old one as I have cleaned it out as best as I could and it does not looked blocked.

I wonder how much a new cat costs? Seems to me that whatever it costs isnt going to be as cheap as spending half an hour with a hammer and a bit of bar? In my view though its even easier to slice one end of the cat off on the original weld, remove the internals and weld back together.
I prefer to keep the car standard and road legal as regards the MOT and so require a working cat. Also I aim to pass the car on to a relation of the wife who hopefully will pass her test at the end of this month. That is why I am doing all this work to try and ensure that all is as well as I can make it.

My de-catted van always passed its MOT, ran better and was more economical than with cat fitted.

A cat has to be fitted if there was one originally, but as long as you simply remove the insides and refit the shell, it will be fine for MOT. Diesels only have to pass a smoke test, and personally I would say removing the cat is likely to reduce smoke, and provide lower emission levels in some cases.........

People have some very weird ideas about diesel engines and emissions, which in some cases are likely to cost them a good deal of money.
