1.6 hdi 16valve had dpf in 2002 sure the 1.4 hdi did as well only the 2.0 8 valve HDI did not have dpf until engine changed to 16 valve in 2004 then dpf from then on
so without looking at the car i would assume it has one

Thanks wookie but it was meant as a bit of humour. I would not expect anybody to go out of their way as life is hard as it is.
Chris, as I said, it is to be used for me just to have wheels to get to the shops or the like instead of taking the LDV Cargo I have. I hope to have finished with it once I have changed the daughters Jimnys' clutch and rear trailing arms in time for the Nov. MOT
I would have thought the expensive bit would have been the turbo but until I track down the culprit I will keep trying.

Up to you, but having owned 2 HDI powered vehicles in the past, get the feeling you are in line for a good deal of aggravation and expense.

Certainly been my observation that private cars are at auction for a reason.

Just sometimes it's cos the seller can't fix the problem themselves and a garage has quoted a lot .. But it's not often a bargain

You've got something that has numerous faults that you can't be arsed to fix, part ex it at the dealers (new or used) for something better, the dealer shifts it to the auction...

Auctions = bad news if you want reliable motoring, good news if you are handy with the spanners

I guess most of the stuff that ends up at auctions has is from dealers, and has previously been offered to part time traders working from home (who are often handy with the spanners), or from private sellers who cant afford repair work, and want to get more than scrap value for their car. This means auction is a bad place to buy anything older, which is almost invariably going to have major problems. I have seen cars which have been put "down the block" by traders, which are pretty close to scrappers....................

I managed to get the cat off and it has not broken up internally but the grill at the inlet does have a covering of sooty dust, for want of a description, and although blowing through it with what pressure I can muster it seems clear I reckon the higher flow rate of plus 2800 rpm could be a struggle.
I connected my code reader to the car but it could not establish a link through the can bus/eobd . But as there were no engine related messages triggered I doubt there were any defects logged. But what do I know!

Take a lump hammer and beat the contents of the cat out, do the same for the dpf....

Really the only thing to do, but would guess more likely to be an EGR problem..............But then again as its an HDI could be pretty much anything!

only peugeot planet 2000 will read all the codes or snap on solus will read most but not all
again i ask is engine management light on or not should come on with ign and go off
before or with start if not either bulb gone or has been removed so been long time problem 307 and codes are a problem for readers

The Peugeot Expert van I had years ago had problems like this and it was the clutch switch! Also had a Navarra that popped and banged over 2000 revs and that was a switch on the gearbox! Not always obvious without reading codes.....

clutch switch cut the revs same as brake switch also cuts the revs on psa group cars etc
but cuts to idle speed not 3000rpm limp mode

 

[Turbo]

DO NOT smash out the interior of the DPF if there are pressure sensors fitted on the exhaust pipes either side of the DPF. If you do the sensors will sense the pressure difference and throw up a warning light. You can decat them but you need to get an engine mapper to disable the sensors.

You can clean out the DPF with a steam washer and plenty of detergent. I did this annually on my brother in laws 307 HDI and got out a surprising amount of red ash each time!

Woudnt think a 2002 has a DPF, but if it does it will be clogged solid and other than smashing the insides out, replacement is probably the only way to get car running properly if thats the problem.
