I set it same way as the sp200, blade between insert and tailstock centre.
The old resharpened tag insert cut normal steels fine. I didnt try them today on anything else, its just en19t is pushing the machine with this insert, past its limit.

Strange they cut beautifully for me but maybe they do require a bit more rigidity or something.

Not really sure as I bought it a long long time ago but think it will be CXA.

@Kram I wonder if your headstock bearings are decent? I had a horrible time trying to groove a big pin the other week, and it turned out the problem was in my live centre - cheap and nasty small one. Usually my parting blade goes through stuff like butter, but this time it screeched and vibrated even feeding by hand. I put the big centre in, no more problems.

Yes, something like that. I also had a CXA on the Student roundhead and it was fine for that also. Reason I went for that on the Student was I had commonality between holders for both lathes.

You didn't keep the student cxa toolpost did you?

No, went with the lathe when I sold it.

I wanted to get some decent quality inserts and went with the shop-apt uni-tip branded GTN2's, as Id had good results with there other stuff.

Cant get them to cut. Its on centre, Ive tried plus and minus. Does the swarf in pic tell anything?
I still have my last useable chinese gtn2 in other end of the blade, its chipped, but it cuts ok with decent swarf wheels coming off. This bar is just mild steel. These apt inserts have much less top rake than the fragile chinese ones.

I had problems earlier in the year, the Iscar blade and inserts were just as stubborn, lots of chatter and wouldnt cut properly, until I learnt to wind them in harder... Trird that.

Any ideas?

Is the stock inn the chuck flexing.
Have you tried with a dead center
