Oh no not another Willys Gasser build, this time a Willys shop truck

Bit of a small update, I finished a job ive been meaning to do for ages, Because I didnt want to cut the firewall back too much I had to notch the front for the radiator, just 2 small notches, I had left them but it bugged me so got the glass & resin out and blended & fettled the notches to look a bit more in keeping with the rest.

Thats what is so good about all of Steves work, it doesn't look custom, it looks like it was always supposed to be that way!

About time I did an update I guess, not done much as been a bit ill and had a big operation but I have been able to do small light jobs, first up was i've seen some rocker cover wing nuts on a few Y blocks in the states but the prices were stupid so I decided to make my own. So I bought some 12mm butterfly nuts to get a decent size, the valve cover studs are 5/16" unf so I spun up some adapters and welded them into the butterfly nuts, the welds were then sanded smooth and the ears trimmed, these need to be polished yet.


















I did a hell of a lot of sanding on the panels but its difficult to continue so my buddy Brad has stepped in and helped me out, he is a very good pro body man so it will be top notch I know. heres a few pics, its actually a lot further on but I havn't taken any pics recently.





















Seeing as we were getting towards the painting stage I chose the colour, It looks grey in the pic but it has green in it also, It will be shiny 2K straight colour, originally it was going to be a satin red/brown oxide, but the panels are now so very straight and it deserves a nice shiny colour, I chose something that would look an older colour

Now it was all stripped down I had to repair the cutouts in the front panel and trim the horns back 3", the main spring leaves are being shortened 3" and the front shackle re positioned 3" further back to keep it all behind the front panel. exactly the same as I did on my coupe
First the horns were trimmed and boxed off, the drivers side horn has the towing eye in it so a nut was welded on the inside of the capping plate, once this was done a piece of studding was ground to a point so I could mark the hole in the front panel and drill out with a holesaw.

No mate, the gasket allowed me to align them

Well all the panels and cab are now down to 240 grit and ready for primer, I thought the door skins would of straightened when blocking the gelcoat but they are so poor mouldings they needed a skim, not terrible but had to be done.

Felt a lot better today so perched myself on a chair and stripped the old Y block.
I was pleasantly surprised to find it had been rebuilt a few miles ago, pistons are
+030 and the bores are absolutely perfect, also bearings and crank in nice condition but -010 all over, it's gonna have a grind and a bore anyway as will be taking it out a bit, so don't really matter.
The best part of for me is no sludge anywhere, these old Y blocks are common for sludging up badly and that's often why they demise.
Got one stubborn pipe plug to drill out and then it's off to the hot tank for a damn good clean and then onto machining and modification.
Its will get a reborn and hone and also will be squaring the decks to the crank as these blocks are often out of spec, the decks will also be getting a good skim as the Pistons were 40 thou down the hole as standard which is not a good quench so we need to improve that.
