Looks like R4 is a single lip seal with a metal outer, R21 is single lip and rubber coated, sounds like it should be fine to swap them.

Second seal was a pain in the ass to get to, I undid the six bolts in the last image and fought the big circlip off (Really should get some decent circlip pliers), couldn't pull the bearing off though, in the end had to modify an old C spanner to take off the headstock pulley in order to work the big drive belt off, which leaves just enough room to unbolt the pulley and clutch housing (Part 58 in the diagram, drawn backwards) as one complete unit, the seal sits on the back of it and is also listed incorrectly in the manual. It's labelled "C - Weston W21916237R4", Bearingboys have that one too. Five days delivery though, what am I gonna do without a lathe for a week!




I'll give it all a good clean before reassembling.

Andy pointed out the headstock needed topping up when he dropped it off, it's only taken six years to have a go.

How will you make a seal driver for your new oil seals without the lathe...

Sounds like a good excuse to buy a press.

Just one question - those seals even when leaking wouldn't throw all the oil out... and when the lathe is sitting, they sit too high to allow all the oil to seep out... so where is the oil still getting out?

After I swapped the O rings on the clutch lever last year, the oil level only dropped to the level of those shaft seals, there was still about a litre of oil in the bottom this time.

Gave everything a good clean with IPA and a microfibre rag, the door and swarf guard got scrubbed with MucOff and pressure washed clean (The black marks are chips in the paint).

The bolt which holds the middle threading gear still had the original oiler on it, I do prefer these but the rubber has long perished, I thought I'd already replaced all of them.



The nut which holds the spindle pulleys on is cross drilled for a grub screw to lock it in place. The grub screw was missing but I've I cut and annealed a tiny bit of 6mm copper to stop the threads getting mashed when I replace it.
