Whilst difficult to check, Myford used 20DP and 14.5 degree pressure angle, setting the mesh could be done with a sheet of newspaper as clearence-- just remember to remove all of it and double check the gears and the gear train run smoothly by turning the train by hand. As for operation, the Toufnel is used for a reason and had been used for a very considerable number of years, But make a misstake and run the carriage into the chuck or the headstock, the first damage will be the toufnel gears. Some lathes in the latest Harrison range use tufnel for the very same reason.

They are the change wheels, not the tumblers, neither does he list the tumblers

There's no way to alter the mesh at all, the gears are on pins that have no side to side give

Looking at the original myford catalogue, it is one off 28t and one off 30t, and crb, cheers, they are the ones I ordered though direct from 'myford'

Take your pick. I know it is not 'solving' the problem, and in fact may just be postponing it again, but a worthwhile backup plan.

Nope. They are both idlers, for that purpose the tooth count is immaterial.

The 30t (new) is .30 mm oversize compared to the old one, the only compromise I could think of would be to open the hole up slightly to allow some movement, however I am by no means an machinist and I imagine there's many reasons not to

doing that the gears would start to chatter . not a good idea

But again, the problem is present with only the two tumblers meshing, I respect your thoughts but I would expect the issue to only present itself whilst installed in the gear train if it was a wider issue, as it stands, with nothiing else fitted to the tTumbler lever, the gears will strip themselves when rotated by hand

I don't know but I would have thought the meshing would have been done via the adjustment knob on the tumbler lever when it engages into the slot ie it adjust to put less pressure on the tumbler gears?

Forgive me in pointing out that the main tumbler gear are the one's thats gone up the swanny,funny isn't it that this is the drive gear that gets driven off the headstock spindle.

I get what your saying mate, I really do, howbver that wouldn't explain why, when the assembly is off the machine, the gears are almost locked solid, and when they will turn, they pull teeth off, now its 5 feet to my bench from the lathe, it's a Hell of a feat for the spindle gear to strip teeth from there

As before, the meshing of the spindle to tumbler is not the issue, it's the two tumblers meshing with each other that's removing teeth
