My new bargain milling machine - wiring help

Fizzy, mines got a MT2 spindle , take the top front belt guard off and the drawbars there.

I got one from drives direct a few years ago. 3/4hp maybe. Can’t remember but I can check. It was a damn site more than 100 quid!

I’m going to sell the Marlow shortly, I’ve not used it for a year or so. It’s time for it to go.

There's always a drawbar on a milling machine, look at the top of the spindle.

Looks like the green/red/black wires are coming out of the switch into the machine, the red & black to a light or something (as said).

The incoming side to the switch has been removed and comes from below, it's terminated under the small paxolin panel, you can just see the screw on the black phase.

As said, the earth goes to the clamp at the bottom right.

Don't forget to fit a gland to the incoming cable.

I think that the previous owners have removed the isolator from use and simply used the terminals as a junction box for the lo-volt light connection. That means the light feed is probably hooked to the NVR feed therefore permanently live whilst the machine is plugged in.

If fitting a VFD I'd keep the isolator and NVR, use the NVR to feed both light and VFD so that the light tells you that you've left the power on. Make a fixed pendant for the VFD controls and have the whole lot fed by the isolator for belt-and-braces safety.

Not convinced. There's no other sign of a mains input connection, that box on the end of the other cable looks like a footswitch.

just take the cover of the push button starter identify the 3 phases supplying it and end of speculation loose the green if its being used as a phase .stop the confusion

Pop the cover off the motor terminals too, and post a pic off how it's wired so we can see whether you can wire it to 240 and use a normal VFD (nice one, not too expensive)

I think the OP has 3ph as he was saying about wiring a 5 pin plug.

If there are 3 switched connections on the input isolator they will be for 3 lives (three phases red yellow blue probably) blank the negative and wire the earth to the machine body but if your not sure get someone to check you don't want any accidents with 415 volts

Well here is my wiring - hope it is correct? Yes I will install a cable gland asap - just want to know if this is correct.

Yes there is a foot switch and a lo volt light fitted.

it will work ok but brown is L1 BLACK L2 AND BLUE L3 and the cables go behind the brown rail it will lift out if you slacken the screw out of right hand side to get them behind

Do I change the plug end for that configuration?
I was copying the way my welder plug was wired!

Surely that’s L1 Brown, L2 Black and L3 Gray. Blue is neutral.

Well I will put the wires behind the bar and use a cable gland but as some idiot cut off the grey wire it can stay as it is grrrr.

Why can't the terminals in the machine be marked the same way as the plug?

Loosened the drawbar but can't get the collet chuck out - do you just give the thing a clout?

tap the top of the draw bar with a copper hammer

The drawbar is just a threaded rod - doesn't look like it will take much punishment. Perhaps a solid bar down there?
