the turret has a better speed range. a longer bed .and a quill feed . it realy is the bees kneeze but i couldnt justify buying one for the work i dobright, you could say you was very fortunate to pick up an x uni machine with little or no usage at all at the right price and a good size for home work shop. like you mentioned tho having to use your brothers turret for some jobs that can not be done very easily or at all on the e1s makes the turret machine more desirable.
One advantage the turret mills do have over the horizontals is that they are easier for the novice to learn on, especially if they are going to teach themselves.
i use both. i learnt on a turret at college
have my own universal and use my brothers turret if nececary its all down to price . whats available and whats suitable. the 1es suits me fine it does everything i want it to do the tooling is no dearer for the int 30 taper than an r8. i got all of mine with the mill for 750 quid the machines mint its from durham university and hardly used a big difrence from over 12oo quid then another 400 for a converter as they canot be run on a cheap 240v 3phase inverter
How so? There is more chance of the head being out of alignment or tram with a turret due to the multiple planes of adjustment. A plain vertical mill is always in tram as set by the factory.

You don't need £400 worth of converter to run them. A £200 variable frequency drive will do the job with a bit of wiring, and allow a lot greater speed range from the motor.

be interesting to see how much it eventualy goes for i certainly wouldnt buy one without being able to go look at it 1st though and check it over for wear on the table and quill bearings ect . its down to your expectations of how acurate u need things to be . if u arent that fussy most machines will do .i have an old pallas horizontal mill it will cut for england not a lot of wear in it eitherthere is one on fleabay at the moment thats ok for home use item number: 130382719819

I'm a fan of horizontals as well, I have 2, great for ripping metal, one job I do involves milling a grove 25mm wide x 14mm deep, in a mild steel block, done in one cut. You cant do that on a Bridgeport
I also have a Bridgeport, fine for light non precision work (+-0.005") & best of all, a 3/4 ton Polish FOP toolroom miller, (Table travel is only 12" x 9") 45yrs old, scruffy paint, built like a brick sh**house & still works to better than (0.0006") =6 tenths of 1 thou in X & Y & +-0.001" in Z.
It cost me £300 & a day to fetch it, a new equivalent is around £40,000
Using a horizontal is more intimidating for a beginner and it's easier to visualise what you are trying to achieve with a vertical. I think it's because the general layout is more familiar being so similar in design to a common drill-press. Tooling is more abundant too.
