Is the B20 a standard Volvo red block engine ?
As it's derivative of the B20, is there anything to stop you using a B20 block from a breaker? Did the marinising add anything to the block casting, iow?

I don't recall reading how clean was the block when it went in? Did you see all of the pitting, and ask for it to be gone, or had you not cleaned off all the previous head gasket remnants, so th efaults were still covered?
If the latter, MAYBE they took a first pass to clean off the crud, and then realised how bad it was. Perhaps it should've gone in clean. Perhaps they should have phoned you to discuss it, or explained when you picked it up. But you were in a hurry (Camping) so maybe they didn't feel inclined to waste your time reading the file notes...
I'm disappointed for you that 99% of your dealing with others are so problematic. Mine aren't.
Just out of curiosity , whats it off ,,, it looks old and low tech , a lot of talk here about piston heights etc etc , look old enough to me to have clearance in feet and inches Im thinking its not for the TT next year .
Some engines have a range of gaskets available to accommodate different piston protrusions. You measure the protrusion and select the gasket thickness to suit.Off on a slight tangent question.
So you skim an engine block.
Depending how much you take off can you really buy head gaskets of different thicknesses, or a head gasket is a head gasket, and it's the con rods length you change ?
Thanks, I had been wondering. Some engines have a range of gaskets available to accommodate different piston protrusions. You measure the protrusion and select the gasket thickness to suit.
Skimming the pistons is also an option as long as the piston design allows it.
Never heard of rods being changed to accommodate different deck heights.
No you deck a block, different thickness gaskets are usually available but the pistons are usually machined down to suit the block height.Off on a slight tangent question.

Lol, start again advise, suprised it's not "do you really need to use an old volvo" advice...As it's derivative of the B20, is there anything to stop you using a B20 block from a breaker? Did the marinising add anything to the block casting, iow?
Red block Volvo engines, are renowned for their reliability and power.Lol, start again advise, suprised it's not "do you really need to use an old volvo" advice...
They do but I usually go a bit further than factory stuff will accommodate or survive. Not even custom. Ford and Chevy main dealers used to do different pushrod lengths straight from the factory for this reason.
you catch more flies with sugar than salt.If they have misunderstood something. i cant see how as it has been skimmed just very little. and no reason why as thye did not talk to me about anything wen they could of and had chance.
I could of walked out without paying as the chap who put it in the van went off to answer the phone and then talk to another customer. i stood there untill somebody else came and i paid. it seems they dont know what there doing and not organised. Which i so excuse for bad work let out wit no explanation at all.
but as said ill call them tomorrow. I am a decent chap, not arrogant or aggressive so ill be nice even with this.
This is a 1975`ish Volvo block, same as used in Amazon cars etc. Well where they were first used untill modded for marine use by a couple of companies
There high revving engines to run max output upto 4000rpm. so need to be half decent as not plodding around in a car.
this is the gasket kit, i think composite with metal rim for the bore tops. What head gasket is it, composite or Metal Layered Steel?.
Composite are a bit more forgiving but personally I wouldn't use the block in that state.
