My mistake, same principle applies, any pitting could actually be filled with belzona 111 and machined!its the block that has been worked on

take a good look at glass as its not smooth at all it has a ripple effect
you can see the ripple effect when you look offside looking at reflections

The rebore and hone look good .
Nicely dragged top of the bores .
Block face has not been ground / machined in any way .
Standard road engines have plenty of meat to allow for machining .
Not the end of the world to have the pistons topped if clearance is a issue .

float glass is flat enough using micrometer blue for checking the faces

I used to use a piece of 1/4 plate security glass, was near enough for pit work. And far cheaper than a big surface plate

yep originaly before float glass was invented it was polished plate ground and polished flat

As said in #9 fit crank rods and pistons and check,
You can remove a few th from piston if needed as DB mentioned, we always checked piston to deck height either with a glass sheet and burette (did that to check compression ratios anyhow) or a height gauge for rough and ready
#10 cyl2 the scratch?wants checking with dye penetrate, had a Ford block with a mark like that ran ok but used oil like a alky

Yes it’s been skimmed, a decent size flycutter will do that for you, even my single point would. What they should have done is phoned to tell you the skim they took - 5 thou or so - wasn’t enough to clean up the whole surface. And carry on/not. Of course, the pistons come nearer the top, but will be most of 40 thou away, not even allowing for how low they are to begin with.
What you should have done is give them the bloc with the crank and one piston and rod still in it, then they would know how much they could skim safely (like I said 40 thou to play with, 30 allowing for clearance at least). So if the took 5 off, another 5 would have been fine, and another if required. I regularly run pistons 15 thou proud, and these are race engines, not put put barges.
Measure, take it back, skim again unless you want leaky head gasket.

I'd say it has had a very light skim, as you can just about make out the swirls from a very large fly cutter/face mill.
As has been mentioned, if you take off too much, then you end up with too much piston protrusion, and that will write of some blocks, depending on the piston design and whether the pistons can be skimmed.
Ideally you'd measure piston protrusion, and then decide on the best course of action.

I have skimmed hundreds of heads both alloy and cast .
Must have done 100 blocks would never leave one like that .

thats what it all boils down to ,,, wouldnt enter any decent machine shops mind to return anything in that state without a serious conversation first.

weve all been there , but after paying for the job [ what did they actually charge for ? ] you sort of expect it right
if they gave you an invoice see if youve been charged for a skim , or just the bores honed , they dont look like they have been bored if so they would have asked for a piston or at least size .
