Safety engineer in the railway signalling business.
Used to do welding for a 7.25" miniature railway I owned and ran. Now it's just for the classic cars (TR7, 2x Stag, Rover P5B) and of course the obligatory LandRover!
Familiar with MiG, just bought myself a TiG!

I voted for hobby but didnt put what I do exactly !
Working in IT for Britannia after finishing my Biology degree (as you do), but will soon to be out of a job due to the Coop buying us then sodding up their accounts and now shutting us down on the IOM.
Welding / metalwork was an addition to the long list of hobbies, I do a lot of house diy jobs (plumbing / electrics / plastering / joinery / tiling etc) and welding was a sort of natural progression as well as a way to make metal sculpture things for sale as part of the home business.
Slowly building up a vast armoury of welding stuff and now have arc, mig, tig, gas and lots of metalcraft tools and accessories.
Currently working on getting the house sorted to sell to get the house me and the missus want, which has a garage 4 times the size of mine so I can actually have a decent space to make stuff with the added bonus of not much but livestock around us. No whingy neighbours !
That may push me down a new career path but we will see !

I had to kind of tick other, i dont class myself as a proffessional though i was certified many many years ago (not medically i might ad) we have just set up a company to reshore manufacturing and whilst i still love machining welding and messing with carbon fibre (in a F1 capacity ) we have other fish to fry now

I've gone for 'Other", I work as a service engineer which can/does involve welding at times. I own a Range Rover, build and repair various things, I enjoy welding, machining and mechanics, its just another string to my bow.
I trained as a commercial vehicle mechanic many years ago, when Ford D Series, Bedford TK's and Atkinson borderers were state of the art HGV's......
I enrolled at Evening College (late 80's) on a Welding Course for 3 years, to learn a bit more about the various forms of welding.
I hate having to pay someone else to repair my things...

I once paid someone to do some welding on a car then decided that I could do a better job myself, bought the kit and just cracked on with it, self-taught with a lot of help from this site and University of California YouTube videos. MIG to date, TIG is next.

i love the landy comment, and the reason i'm teaching myself to weld
Voted as hobby. I work in radio communications, but enjoy metalwork, but the hoby tends to be practicle, just not into makeing models!
The kit car was the main project, and that includes making things to make it. Have a couple of mills including a chinese small that I CNC'ed a lathe, that cost about £250 originally to buy, before the mods began. Latested build toy was a tube bender to bend the tube for my roll bar in 45mm dia by 2.5 mm wall.

Put down as a hobby user, got the welder but not used it yet. It's a Xmas present for my son who wants a mk 2 escort to do up. Think I'm going to enjoy it more than him. It's the only year I can't wait for Xmas day to come, normally not keen on xmas
I'm hoping to do a similar thing. Currently not enjoying being a wood butcher.
Been around a few local small shops to find a shortage of machinists under 50 yrs old. Sadly being 25 yrs old I missed out on doing any metal working at school, though they did still have the lathes and mills the teachers weren't qualified to use them. Annoyingly the nearest non cnc machining course I can find is over in Bridgewater. Looks like I'll be concentrating on the welding

Long term goal is to build a track car, similar to an Atom but then I keep looking at BMW M3 donor cars and think a '7' maybe more suitable.

Evening all! well im a somewhat hobby welder ie don't it for a living but seem to have a regular call for car/automotive repairs and general bits of fabrication (caravan stairs,gate/fence modification etc), i served my time as a light and heavy vehicle mechanic but now work as an HGV 1 driver,having just moved house i am about to start work for a major steel stockholder (which could be useful).
