I watched a bit of it and the underground works was very familiar territory for me. These are the sort of jobs I sometimes get to work on (but not this one). Back in the day we were about the only company in London using electric machines to do hand-drive tunneling (including for the contractor in the program) but nowadays everyone and their dog has them. They have had larger digging machines like Schaeff/Blue Badger for years but the 10 foot tunnels were always hand driven until the smaller electric machines came along. We can not only dig the clay but we also have an attachment for picking and placing the concrete segments that bolt up to form the rings.

Working silently does have it's challenges. What seems like no noise at all to a builder/miner will be very intrusive to someone used to working in a quiet environment. Working on a pile under a structure the sound does carry upwards. Clay does dampen sound quite well but concrete transmits it brilliantly (they use ultrasound to check the piles for cracks by timing the reflected sound wave. If there's a crack in the pile they'll get 2 reflections).

The 360s looked like normal excavators to me? Footage from 2018 so before JCB electric excavators etc?

They always have really good ventilation. I didn't see any of the digging part TBH I only caught a bit towards the end, but yeah they were probably just modern diesel machines. Plant in London has to comply with clean-air legislation now for engines over a certain size. You can get exemptions for certain types of machine but ordinary constuction plant is all affected.

I bought a couple of places in Mayfair way back in the 80's. Made a mint in rent in them.



I haven't played Monopoly for ages now though.

My son, “Bernie, I want you to take the Mayfair houses.”

My daughter “Sybil, you take the apartments over in the east end.”

My son, “Jamie, I want you to take the offices over in the City Center.”

“Sarah, my dear wife, please take all the residential buildings on the banks of the river.”

The nurse and witnesses are blown away as they did not realize his extensive holdings, and as Doug slips away, the nurse says, “Mrs. Smith, your husband must have been such a hard-working man to have accumulated all this property”.

Sarah replies, “Property?…. the old bugger had a newspaper route!”

Ye god's that's an old one, he was a window cleaner when I heard it.... Many moons ago... still funny though

I was once involved in a project in Manhattan, it was a Mitchelin starred restaurant and lunch was over $150 a plate back then, we had to stop work around eleven in the morning and restart about two in the afternoon, I clearly remember everything was a nightmare, just getting your tools on site was a marathon and an exercise in security way above and beyond the norm, if it wasn't nailed down it vanished. Must have cost millions, we were working on the first floor, the diners were all below us and the old paint was floating down from the ceiling.

Just saw episode 2 last night and I too noticed the knobs walking about without PPE.
If it's good enough for them it's good enough for me too

Here's a hole I'm currently working in, it's also in Mayfair and goes down 5 levels.

Plenty of money for some!
