My father was (is, probably) a gambling addict, lost his business, house, family, friends

It is an illness, he has a diagnosis and has had support but it really is not a choice when it takes over you

I am sorry - humans can be additive by nature.

Drugs - dieting - alcohol - spending - binge eating - work - sex - the list is endless...

People can be destructive by habits - without meaning to be - to the those about them...

I have very strong addictive tendencies and it has been a nightmare in the past

Then come home when the pub is shut and a skinful

Yes I do, convince me otherwise and I might think differently.

I'm not saying that gambling isn't addictive, I'm not saying it doesn't destroy lives, ruin faimilies and relationships and leave people desperate and destitute, but no-one frog-marched them to the bookies to lay that first bet.

I worked with a gambling addict who got paid on Friday and spent all Saturday morning in the bookies. It consumed him (and his money) but he would be the first to say that it was all his own doing.

I feel your pain, I've always been the '1 is too many, 20 is not enough' kind of guy. It's been the bain of my life, and I daren't even socialise in a pub event nowadays, for fear of making a total cnut of myself.

I only ever buy what beer I think need/want for the night, then I lock myself away for the evening, like some vampire recluse.

In an earlier life I actually gave up drinking, totally, for 16 years, but it didn't last....

Me too, although I am beginning to see a little progress. I can have a couple now and stop. If I have that 3rd it’s all over.
Having said that I am naturally loosing interest in beer all together

I’m on dry January and already feel so much clearer in my thought process

Oddly I had a full health screening and my liver function test came back perfectly fine. No joke but I lost half a stone sweating with worry

I usually stop on my birthday in November, my record is 7 months dry. It is amazing how much better you feel physically and mentally and you are so much more productive!!
It’s when them warm summer days arrive my resolve breaks
