Mayfair Hotel Megabuild

Anyone watch this on BBC2 last night ?
Refurbishment of Claridges Hotel , building 4 stories on top, and digging down for 5 new basement levels.
All whilst the hotel is being used by guests.
They got an Irish Mining crew in to HAND dig the new foundations to support the existing slab.
64 shafts down to around 25 metres that then had steel jackets put in and filled with concrete.
They also had to create an opening in the existing lift shafts to install a tower crane.
Well worth a watch on the iplayer if you didn't see it. First episode of 3 on there now.

Did you see the bit where they asked the guy if they had told the guests in advance about the building work . I think his face told the answer
Probably just told most of them to turn down their hearing aids and they would have been blissfully unaware

It's often easier to stay open

I'm working on some hospital projects, can't even close a ward as no capacity to move patients elsewhere

Luckily no theatres in this phase

I too have been down there

Initially they wanted a 2 story deep basement below the current set up

This is to remove the plant rooms off the top two floors and replace one with a massive swimming pool

The chap that did it said he wouldn’t come out of retirement for 2 storeys so they asked how many he could do

7 was what they wanted but was too close to the underground

It was like a cathedral when I went, incredible is an understatement

Lost revenue from shutting vs increased cost of doing it without noise making machinery.

I suspect it was just numbers, nothing much more.

Yeah, I can guess why you were there, my reason was probably connected to what you guys were doing

They mentioned they didn't want to lose loyal customers by shutting for a few years.
(I guess if you go elsewhere out of necessity and that place ends up being better, then chances are you wouldn't go back)

I helped a mate out for 6 months in his plant hire business I hated having to drive to London every day but the money was superb

Had to go and fix a digger that was down there
Iv been in the HS2 sites as well but not as interesting as the basement

Twas very good, even I was captivated.
I think I heard them taking £500 a night of the £3000 room price for the noise.
