I have looked at my dads old scrapers: 1950's used for scraping babbit bearings, so not what I need.

They look a bit fat on the end to me. Probably OK on the flat but not so clever tucked into a vee way and if you're planing to scrape the saddle top ways they are recessed so that scraper won't get in there.

You can easily make a scraper I use 25mm x 3mm or 4mm flat steel bar from Tilgear. You can buy enough material to make ten of them for the price of one of those.

They'll be fine, someone will come along and say 'at that price it's most likely Russian carbide'

You also need a way to sharpen the carbide - a slow speed diamond disc is ideal

Russian carbide is sharpened on 8 faces from the factory.

I have had a stinking man flu for 7 days now, fed up, 5 minutes in the workshop and am in coughing fits. In my spare time I have been watching scraping videos.....

So first question, for sharpening the carbide scraper, what type of diamond wheels should I look at?

For low speed rotation of the grinding wheel, what sort of speed am I looking for? Any suggestions for a bench grinder to setup for this?

Will be looking at straight edges next!

I'll post a thread on my carbide sharpener later, just got it up and running last night, but 2000, 2500 or even 3000 grit is all it needs to tickle them up once they are ground to shape.

I use the coarsest one I can get to shape them, 1500 for general scraping and 2000/3000 for a fine honed finish if I need it. 300-400 rpm.

If you got a lathe you got a sharpener. Take the jaws out of the chuck and stick the disk on the face with double sided tape. Don't use much tape or it won't come off. Block of wood for a rest and away you go. put a rag on the bed to catch any dust.

Had to make a faceplate for it to take the diamond lapping wheels but works well on the scraper I got from @Pete.
It's 3 phase and I'm running it on an inverter so varialable speed which is nice.

I couldn't believe it hung about in the forsale section for as long as it did until I couldn't resist.

It's a lovely bit of kit and will be great for sharpening the odd HSS lathe tool or shaper bit as well.

OFF - I think I saw on this forum?? an attempt to make a low speed scraper sharpening machine using a disc grinder from Lidl. I can't find this post.
The grinder from Lidl is cheap, but the issue of the minimum rotation speed of the motor axis is not known. Maximum speed only 4,000 rpm
