I would think it'd be a lot easier, if selling and didn't have the required documents, to just take the offending stove out and leave it in the garage. Can't imagine it would be the difference between buying and not buying for many.

It is already at the stage where wood is more expensive than gas or oil.
Only if you can scrounge wood free are they worth having. Still cheaper than electric heating though!
They cause so much pollution and are a huge step backwards - so much for renewables.
Yes I run a woodburner. I get free wood and live in the middle of nowhere. No neighbours to pollute.

In a lot of heavily populated conurbations wood burner heating is prohibited due to the large amount of particulates emitted. It used to be in the offing that you supposedly registered their use and paid a licence for them no matter where in England or Wales you lived.

That may have gone to the wall these days but you are supposed to use a certified approved wood burner installer and comply with all sorts of planning permissions

Wasn't CE an EU certification, do to with being fit to be used in the EU? Just someone making up hoops for us to jump through which achieve nothing. Much of the rubbish from China carries a CE sticker, well stickers are cheap aren't they...

You have to be very careful in knowing what is a Chinese Excuse and what is a Certificate of Engineering marking / sticker
Years ago when I did my industrial electronic testing and servicing studies we had to do a lot of study on UK / EU / Provence of quality & labeling etc.
These days to government website should have legitimate examples .. the shape and spacing of the lettering is given and IIRC they have geometric relationships & set spacings

There's nothing difficult about mining coal. That's a load of nonsense.

With todays technology and machinery availability, an open cast mine in the right location could run all of the remaining coal plants we have.

Having toured that giant in Merthyr for a 1hour trip a few years ago,it is ugly and a blot,but a lot safer for the miners.

wont matter, they still need a bit of paper. just like i had to fork out another £120 for this stupid insulation value of the house before i could even put it on the market few months ago. Its all a racket and old blighty falls for it again

i cant see why they cant do all of that with surveyors report when you buy the house as it would be the same thing

as goes for r value or better known as the energy efficent of your home it would be the same thing as above

however ive known it fail due to the old owner not forwarding the details with the house being sold even though it was done via a grant that paperwork has not been transfered even though it was used to sell the property the new owner has not been forwarded these details via the mail or even the email or even by the sale of the house

so now hes left to get his own details again that needs to be paid for

All our planning permisions and electrical & energy certs etc. are in heat sealed envelopes in a metal " housing file" box .

In the roof void are photo copies of the insulation and new roof compliance stuff which are also in clear heat sealed envelops[es and stapled to a prominent place in the void .

It was easy to do them as & when the work was done & the certs issued . Some thing we tend to always do is quickly deal with the paper work in a safe & reasoned manner .

since we are being forced to digital anyway its just as easy to have a digital register via the house sale or even by land registry after all its what you pay for every time you buy or sell the house

the energy efficent rating can easily be added to those docs

the issue stands is its based everywhere and theres no one point for all of these forms yet land registry or point of sale can register these details easily

When we moved house four years ago, I took the stove with us, so no need for certification.

Mother's house had one of those survey things, totally unknown to me, in fact I only found out when her neighbour gave me a copy their estate agent (they were selling up) gave them my mother's by mistake. By the time the house was sold it was all bullocks anyway, because we'd blown all the (soggy) cavity insulation out.
There really is so much ******** about these days it's unbelievable, but I do agree every wood burner install should be checked (and Rayburn solid fuel cookers should be banned, having being almost killed by one).

And they’re going to do what? Lovingly install the flue, hug a couple of trees on the grounds on the way into the house, say a prayer to the environment on their way out.

It’s a wood burner, it spews out smoke, it’s sh-t for the environment, but it reduces your Octopus energy bill by several hundreds of pounds per month.

I fitted mine myself, all done very nicely, no building control involved, good SS flue, when I come to sell the house it can sit in the garage for the next owner to decide if it’s in line with their environmental Karma, ….. Honestly having to get paperwork done to fit a heating device, what a stupid society we live in these days.

You would be wrong

Before Hetas I had a good sideline in log burners, usually where I had removed a back boiler or something

Decided I wasn't interested in another set of qualifications and assessments so stopped fitting them, when the clean burn rules came out I was glad I had

One of my first log burners is still in regular use, 20 years later

The sweep tells her every year "I wish more were fitted like this one"

You only need paper work for fitting such things as many in society are just a bit to stupid for their own good and ended up brown bread due to dangerous installs, heating, fires, electrics are all regulated to try to prevent this, just like the MSVA was brought in to stop folk strapping a v8 to an old iron bed frame and zooming off down the road.

Most of this stuff isnt rocket science if you read and understand the rules of whats required.

It's people using them wrong and not maintaining them or the flue that's the problem. We've had mine since 1990. It moved house with me and is on now.

If people slumber them on wood they soot up badly.

Mine gets stripped annually and seals checked. The boiler gets cleaned with brushes every 4 weeks. I'm obsessive about the flue and sweep it about 4 times over winter which is probably OTT but with flexible drill powered brushes takes 30 mins inc tidy up and cleaning the rest of the internals.

CO alarm is a must but that's the same whenever there's an appliance burning something.

Just had a SS chimney liner fitted to a stove I installed over 20 year ago. Before it was through a register plate then straight up the chimney, it did draw ok most days but is much better now, more consistent.

The fitter is a friend/neighbour who specialises in fitting stoves, both directly and for a few stove shops, mainly directly now. He's HETAs registered, he didn't find certification onerous and tells me horror stories of some of the stoves he's been out to replace of repair, definitely death traps.

I gave it a rub down and a coat of high temp matt black yesterday. And yes, we do have a CO monitor. It's a Dowling Hybrid Multifuel 8kW, predates the recent efficiency regs but they still make them and they do have some independent testing of the base model. It's all mild steel except the glass, no fire bricks or ropes. Dowling are a small producer based in Scotland that specialise in built to order modifications, size, back boilers, top/back flue entry, double sided, narrow boat specials etc. So almost impossible to test all combinations. Fortunately, they get an exemption due to the small nature of their business. I've got three different stoves from them, all over 20 years old and only replaced the glass in two.

A fitter I worked with in the 70's had a nice sideline in plumbing, heating etc., he was asked to fit a gas fire and found the customer had helpfully removed a few bricks ready for the flue, my mate looked in the hole and could see the back of next doors fire!. Turns out the customer had removed his chimney breast to get more room and thought his fire could share his neighbours chimney, my mate declined the job.
