Log Fires - the future?

This has been sitting here for 4 years now, needs a new fireplace and flue to be fitted. I may get round to it next year once I've finished the double glazing. Just about every other job in the house is now done so there will be no more excuses.

just to make the collective aware that just like many on here i fitted my Defra approved stove myself, propper job with a SS liner, fully sealed 10mm steel closeure plate above fire and a "chinese hat" chimney cowl on chimney. every joint i smoke tested and no leaks...just had a 14 day complete mare with buyers soliciters on my house sale because it was not signed off with a so called expert. in the end i had to pay £80 for insurance for any future problems for new buyers...now sorted but it held the house move up for 2 weeks.

Thats where they get you, unless it has a Hetas ticket to say its been installed properly..... Most stove installers use this as a first class money making excuse to only fit new ones they have supplied.

I thought the building inspector could sign it off, if you cant find one to put their name to anything

If you install yourself or get a non hetas installer to do it you have to go to building control Before you start, they will inspect the work at various stages & if satisfied will issue a buildings regulations compliance certificate, they may then require an inspection by a certified professional chimney sweep!
Sounds like a lot of faff & would obviously cost.

Until 2014, I could supply stoves that I built for use in a house. A customer of mine had one installed and the installer called me up to check the output. The only comment he made was how well made it was. He installed it, with a twin wall external flue that he supplied and signed off the installation, which meant that my stove was CE marked as part of the overall CE mark for the installation. Everyone happy. Then they changed it and the stove must be CE marked. Which meant a test costing £3.5k for each model. The upshot is that I can't sell anyone a well made steel stove for a reasonable price anymore but you can buy some awful cast rubbish from a big company with deep pockets.

Down here in West Wales you pay the council to sent their expert out to asses the job and provide the cert...
Paying insurance for something that might go wrong seems to be opening a can of worms to me - where does that stop?
When we sold mum's house the buyers solicitor wanted us to pay to get the oil boiler serviced - I refused, pay for it yourselves once you've bought the place...

Wasn't CE an EU certification, do to with being fit to be used in the EU? Just someone making up hoops for us to jump through which achieve nothing. Much of the rubbish from China carries a CE sticker, well stickers are cheap aren't they...

CE or British Standard, makes no difference, they'll be hoops to jump through whoever is in charge.

Better to have some standards and legislation than make it a free for all and let Joe Blogs kill you with the stove they made and installed in your house?

Are you not suggesting that you've just not kept the paperwork, it was all so long ago!

wont matter, they still need a bit of paper. just like i had to fork out another £120 for this stupid insulation value of the house before i could even put it on the market few months ago. Its all a racket and old blighty falls for it again ..When i had power boats i used to have to fight the so called "life gaurds" to give me beach access to take my boat down to the water with my car, they where infact beach security gaurds who wanted you to buy a license...i used to hit them with the fact they cant block your rights to beach access to forage for food to feed yourself and family, an old and current bylaw back then...wont be supprised if they have closed that loophole up now as this was 30 years ago.Cant live on the septic island anymore without paying money to somebody

not everyone can fit a stove properly, I saw lots touching the curtains and no hearth etc, or the favourite one, no air supply so the stove suffocates the occupants of the room,
I remember several house fires and a pub on fire after a diy bodger had a go, (flexy flue next to an oak beam,)
would you trust joe public to do a decent job flashing round a chimney?

most on here could do a decent job, 95 % of the rest of the world would cock it up,

fair comment but as soon as all the bodger crew have burnt themselves to a crisp or turned there lips blue that leaves the clever ones to be left alone and crack on living our lives
