Personally I'd go for the legs. They work very well. Fit a decent insulated timber ladder/hatch combo and create an extra step at the top to the height of the new deck.

Did three last year. All rock solid.

I've said in black and white it's not a loft conversion. It's just a decent storage platform in the cold roof space.

I've also said exactly what it's for storing.

What's the thoughts on putting joist hangers in with screws rather than nails?

I'd prefer screws but have read they designed to be used with nails that are in fact stronger than screws.

Screws are obviously easier, quieter to fit, do less damage to ceilings etc.

Screws are prone to sheering. That's why nails are specced.

For eg. Bending and snapping a screw off Vs a nail

There are a number of ways to do this. I was interested in the various ways. It wasn't at all "solved" in the first few posts. Some people just seem to want to score points.

well said my man , bang a few boards in on some legs or whatever jobs done .I dont think you need to be banging in enough timber work to support a ship in drydock to create a bit of loft storage , you seem to be well over thinking it and thats just my opinion with no offence intended , now thats me out .

That was last night up the pub. For a brief couple of hours I can stop the head wheels from turning. Other than that it's one unfinished project after another really.

Probably some form of adult ADHD.

My daughter has unfortunately just been diagnosed as having some form of ASD. Jumping through hoops with that at the mo.

I blame the parents...

just to note the storage is light weight not medium or heavy weight

if your wanting more than light weight

please fit wall to wall beams then a new floor inbetween

You've just described my life exactly except I don't get to the pub
As for the loft, I'd get the Wickes loft legs and some boards, insulate between the joists then another layer at 90° to that. Make sure you leave gaps around any down lighters, Job done.
I doubt you'll get a 4m plus length of 7x2 up there without taking up roof tiles or slicing a hole in a ceiling somewhere, if you wanted to put in a new floor the cost of the timber itself will be just to expensive for simple storage.
I did a similar job on my son's room where the previous owner had extended the room using the 4x2 lounge ceiling joists!
It was a bit bouncy
It was one hell of a job getting the new joists in and I had an empty room to swing them about in!

Something like this maybe? Rafters and purlins etc removed from the drawing for clarity.

A couple of 150x50 (yellow) timber beams adjacent to but independent of the existing (purple) binders. These supported by joist hangers into the end walls. One worry I have is there is from the corner of the stack at the top of the picture to the binder face only nom. 96mm to get a hanger in and new beam.

Then new 150x50 joists (yellow again) across. Noggins of course etc.

The new joists supported by nom 100mm high blocks (blue) down to the existing wall plate (red). That'd cut the span down.

Thus nothing bears on the existing celing or binders. I'd have 1" clearance from the underside of the new (yellow) joists to the top of the existing ceiling joists.

Wouldn't going counter to existing joists help spread the load over the whole structure better?
