Just to get it back to Land Rover territory I was under this helping to put the new clutch and gearbox back in this afternoon.

My 6x6 is a Range Rover Conversion, it left the factory as a 4x4, two door, it is now 6x6 and 4 door it is 18ft long, the conversion was done by a company called Scottorn Trailers, they were later bought out by Reynolds Boughton, they made 4, mine has the plate number 004 but they never used 001, so mine is the official no 3 and the last one built is now in France.

It is genuine 6x6 when the first three were made they were selectable 6x2, 6x4 and 6x6, but when the company started to use mine as the promotion vehicle they made it permanent 6x6, but I still have the the 6x4 warning light on the dash. The drive to the rear axle is through the Middle axle, which is if you get a special vehicle from Land Rover it will have a similar diff to mine as Scottorn sold the rights to Land Rover.

To lock the drive up, used the normal diff lock on the gearbox (LT77 (5speed), never broken the gearbox or transfer box) that locked the front axle and the pair of rear axles, this would mean if you lifted a front wheel you would still move forward, but if you lifted one rear wheel you stopped, so down by the drivers knee was a vacuum switch that worked on vacuum from the engine but that moved a gear in the middle axle and then all axles were lock, you could remove a half shaft and still drive. When it was made had the 3.5 rover V8, but when I bought it had the 6 cylinder 3.6 VM turbo Diesel, which was bl**dy quick especially for a 3 ton car. But because of the power and traction would eat UJs and the chain (Hy-vo or borg warner) in the middle diff that took power from the prop shaft to the middle diff. Last year had the two chain sprockets remade cost £1000, ouch. Hopefully after rebuild will have 3.5 or 3.9 rover V8.

Did a small bit today.
Decided to fit the hubs to the rear axle, it's so satisfying seeing some nice and shiny parts going back together
Firstly I began by greasing the inside bearing of the 1st hub, then fitted the seal which has to be done in that order, I was always taught to use a solid head hammer when putting bearings or seals in as say an aluminium head hammer can trap dirt or drop debris into the bearings.

Slid the one side on torqued it down and checked the end float.

Then slid the other side on but needs to set it up tomorrow.

Looks great though I'm going to tighten it up tomorrow, fold over the locking washers and maybe fit half shafts and end caps. I'll rebuild the callipers and fit those as well I think.

Yes I do, I did an engineering apprenticeship and spent three year in a tool room doing some of everything I learnt so much, and have so many cool things I got or made over the few years there

I believe he worked at FF and had a drive through centre axle on it.
