The problem I can see with the 6x6 is that the rear 2 axles prop shaft will be that short that you wouldn't get any reasonable articulation before the shaft snapped, I would however like to see one with a walking beam axle set up like the scammells

Can I just mention, I had no problem with the prop shafts etc, except the torque of the turbo diesel 3.6 instead of the 4 cylinder 2.4 or 2.5 which was fitted to the range rovers, and this killed UJs and the drive chain in the middle diff, of road was fantastic, but you had to remember it is long and has the turning circle of a super tanker, just to say I had no problems with the range rover gearbox LT77 or transfer box or prop shafts. The 6x6 could and would go where other 4x4 had failed. I did take mine off road, the company also took it of road to possible buyers

Yep... But you had so much power you never noticed the trailer .. All trips had to be planed with fuel consumption in mind so I could fill up on the way, and on the way back ... I think I used to get about 11 miles per gallon ,but I used to charge me fuel costs to the guy I was working for ...result ..jeff

My 6x6 is a Range Rover Conversion, it left the factory as a 4x4, two door, it is now 6x6 and 4 door it is 18ft long, the conversion was done by a company called Scottorn Trailers, they were later bought out by Reynolds Boughton, they made 4, mine has the plate number 004 but they never used 001, so mine is the official no 3 and the last one built is now in France.

It is genuine 6x6 when the first three were made they were selectable 6x2, 6x4 and 6x6, but when the company started to use mine as the promotion vehicle they made it permanent 6x6, but I still have the the 6x4 warning light on the dash. The drive to the rear axle is through the Middle axle, which is if you get a special vehicle from Land Rover it will have a similar diff to mine as Scottorn sold the rights to Land Rover.

To lock the drive up, used the normal diff lock on the gearbox (LT77 (5speed), never broken the gearbox or transfer box) that locked the front axle and the pair of rear axles, this would mean if you lifted a front wheel you would still move forward, but if you lifted one rear wheel you stopped, so down by the drivers knee was a vacuum switch that worked on vacuum from the engine but that moved a gear in the middle axle and then all axles were lock, you could remove a half shaft and still drive. When it was made had the 3.5 rover V8, but when I bought it had the 6 cylinder 3.6 VM turbo Diesel, which was bl**dy quick especially for a 3 ton car. But because of the power and traction would eat UJs and the chain (Hy-vo or borg warner) in the middle diff that took power from the prop shaft to the middle diff. Last year had the two chain sprockets remade cost £1000, ouch. Hopefully after rebuild will have 3.5 or 3.9 rover V8.

If you look on Land Rover Madness http://www.lr-mad.co.uk/en/scottorn-6x6 you will see two Scottorns mine is the messy white one, it is brilliant off road, the off road pictures taken at Billing Aquadrome during the Land Rover show several years ago, I would like to get it there this year, hence my original comment to Kim that she has shamed me into start working on it.

I remember Barry at Dakar had a 6x6 Range Rover parked outside the farm for a few years around the mid or late 90's. He still runs Dakar 4x4 near Dartford but it is a very different business to the one that made the Chalange Aniker car, he might be worth talking to if you or Kim need any info.

I know of a farm where there are is one maybe two 6 wheel drive range rovers . A nice ex barn project for someone perhaps . On he staffs /shropshire border if anyone is interested ?

I'd imagine they are most likely to be TACR 2 tenders and as such would normally be 6x4

As an interesting aside, our dad could have had a mint, straight off the airfield TACR and a series 2 fire engine for the princely sum of £12.50 about 15 years ago, he turned them down as he , and I quote, "didn't want any of those bloody things clogging up the drive "
