How often do water meters go wrong?

Something not right there 1 litre an hour so 24 in a 24 hour period give or take due to pressure fluctuations but 200 sounds like there is more to it, how long has it been going on

A mixture of the Duchy of Cornwall and Farmer 1's father in the late 90's. It is now all blue MDPE apart from a tiny section near the meter. We have replaced the remaining black alkathene that was in the middle with blue MDPE as part of this saga.

We are about 110m lower down hill from the main so pressure is always relatively high down here even if there are problems above, but I get your point - it seems like a hell of a difference still.

We have a few in work but I have known one stop working, you need to have a good look at this as you may be paying too much!

The difference is between 6ltrs and 200ltrs but not sure of the time frame, this could quite easily be a leak and the quantities variable because of pressure fluctuations. Especially out in rural areas where a farm down the road using vast quantities at random times could have a major influence. All supposition though which is why I suggested a pressure gauge to monitor it between meters.

What is stopping you

The thousands it will cost!! The water company arent going to voluntarily run a new main 2 miles (on the road) to my house or voluntarily take responsibility for the current supply pipe!!! A borehole will cost £5-£6k so none of this is a realistic option! I have asked them to review this situation but unfortunately they work slowly and covid19 doesnt make this urgent for them.

I’d be tempted to fill as many containers as I could with water. Fill the bath, kettle etc. Take a reading of both meters and then hold off using any water for as long as you can. When you run out of stored water take another reading from both meters. Then draw off a measured amount as large as you can and then take the meter readings again.

i suspect famous line farmer fitted other things while repiped the mains back in you wont sort it unless new line goes in

im aware of house is on water meter garden is not on water meter from the same line to the house

The farmers late father was an honest man, as is the son who is currently helping me. They haven't tee'd off of this pipe.

So far this has cost me nothing but time, stress and a few quid on connectors - it is a tiny tiny fraction of the cost of re-routing a main for one house..!

you quote the farmer was a honest man and there son everyone has there cheats and deals somewhere

what i do know its not the water board responsibility after the meter which terminates i presume onto the farmers land / boundary

it becomes the farmers / new owners responsibility

I presume you have bought property on the farmers land note im fully aware of old water mains being shared to different propertys in 3s more so in the old lead system

draw a line down to your property

further question does this pipe go over the farmers land yes or no ?

please draw this in green lines

this will show us your boundarys for the propertys

water board will not take over piping over a farmers land as not there responsibility as not there property weather you like it or not

the mains pipe is the farmers/sons responibility once it crosed the boundary onto the property

please do this if you want a truthful answer

I think theres some confusion over the two meters, the waterboard one and a second one youve installed.
Just a thought, how accurate is the meter you've installed.

i dont think there is fraserb

i suspect the one fitted at road side is the mains coming onto the property normally dug up where they cant fit one on the property due to crossing other propertys in the line

which is where i would suspect one to be the fact its on the line means theres a few propertys on that line and are sharing bills

if not that would mean the original meter serviced the full area until new builds was built ( farmer sold off land with built property )

My understanding was the official water board meter is at the main, then theres 1.5 miles of pipe from the meter to the property, they've found leaks in the pipe so decided to fit their own meter at their property to keep an eye on things, currently theres 200 lt a day difference between the meters so there either another leak, a pipe tapped off for a trough or something or 1 of the meters is wrong.

it wont and why should they be responsible for new pipe being laid on someone elses land just to get to the new owners boundary that they bought

untill reb shows a picture of the layout of the land his boundarys and the farmers boundarys and the drive he uses to get to the property he owns

showing the meter, main, boundarys of propertys i cant advise properly where they stand as much as kayos can also advise the same
