Gently flush the growth medium out with a gentle jet of water , you should be able to tease one or two out by pulling gently on a single true leaf.I've just been out to plant some of my lettuce into bigger pots as they're starting to get quite unruly. Opened my bag of compost to find that there's a load of ants in it, and more ant eggs on top. Is there anything I can do to salvage it? It's been in the greenhouse, and although the top was opened a while ago I've made a point of folding it over and weighing it down with a tray, but obviously not to ant-proof standards.
It was a mistake to put the seeds so close together as I've found it virtually impossible to split them, especially while trying not to touch them as advised earlier. I may end up having to write this batch off, or at least most of them, but I've planted a few more seeds individually in a compartmented seed tray now, four out of eight are showing. I've potted some on to individual pots, three into a single ceramic tray, and the rest directly into the garden with some wire netting over them - I expect these won't do anything at all other than feed stuff that can defeat the netting.
