I've just been out to plant some of my lettuce into bigger pots as they're starting to get quite unruly. Opened my bag of compost to find that there's a load of ants in it, and more ant eggs on top. Is there anything I can do to salvage it? It's been in the greenhouse, and although the top was opened a while ago I've made a point of folding it over and weighing it down with a tray, but obviously not to ant-proof standards.

It was a mistake to put the seeds so close together as I've found it virtually impossible to split them, especially while trying not to touch them as advised earlier. I may end up having to write this batch off, or at least most of them, but I've planted a few more seeds individually in a compartmented seed tray now, four out of eight are showing. I've potted some on to individual pots, three into a single ceramic tray, and the rest directly into the garden with some wire netting over them - I expect these won't do anything at all other than feed stuff that can defeat the netting.

Gently flush the growth medium out with a gentle jet of water , you should be able to tease one or two out by pulling gently on a single true leaf.

^ Thanks, I'll give that a go. Earlier in the year it was more of a problem because I was using it for pots to come into the house, I guess I can now just use it in the greenhouse and hope they'll get the hint. I seem to have ants all over the place at the moment, I'm putting powder down all over the shop.

Simple borax powder or a spray solution of it gets rid of ands as it interferes with the production of their food fungus inside the nest .

I can't say for the OP, but these are the bigger ones that don't fit my greenhouse guttering. One of them had been forced into place, but of course had massive gaps around it which meant most of the rain just fell out. I searched around a lot for the ones that fit mine.

I had searched e-bay for the adaptors but unfortunately none the right size and so many listings that don't give the vital dimension.

The greenhouse in question is about 35/40 years old, was MWitA's parents, then we got it about 27 years ago.
I can just about make out the makers name as being Guildhall Garden Products Ltd, who seem to be long gone.

I'll keep looking, once I retire I can get time to make some perhaps.

Has anybody got a neat way of attaching down pipes to Aluminium framed greenhouses that have the built in gutter?

We had plastic adaptors that slotted into the end of the gutter but they have UV rotted
and some have fallen apart so back to balancing acts to collect the water into the butts.

Could you bend up some thin sheet steel to shape?
Or heat form some plastic? (Maybe a piece of gutter which is _almost_ correct?)

Or form something in fiberglass?
You could use the remains of the broken ones as a template - basically:
Glue it back together temporarily.
Fill it with plaster of paris to make a "buck"
Fiberglass.

I'll see if I can make you some Delrin plastic plugs to silicone glue in internally , with a flared 15 mm copper pipe out let that is 25 mm or more sticking out the end of channel . You'll need four of them ???
