My fruit garden progress...
I'm not sure what these are, they should have been Little Gem Lettuce...
This is (got at) Beetroot and some Tomato plants around the edge.
Now here's a mystery. Both of these planters were filled with the same Lidl compost at the same time and have been treated identically. The one that is healthy is all peas. The other one is 25% peas from the same sealed packet and the rest broad beans. One planter has germinated but there is not one single shoot in the other?

I just folded a bit of thin sheet metal to slot inside and extend the gutter a bit to line it up with a down tube, which works OK.
I'll get a picture next time I go to the allotment if I remember.

I had the same trouble, and the ones I can find on line are all the wrong profile for my greenhouse. I haven't got a 3D printer, so I folded some aluminium, drilled a hole, glued a plastic piece to it, and glued a piece of copper into that. I've no idea where the plastic piece came from, I just seem to have a few of them.
The plastic piece recently broke off, so I've glued it back in place and added a couple of small screws to hold it. The problem I have is that the piece sits inside the gutter, so there's a step up for the water to run up. The other greenhouse still has the plastic one in place, and that's the same, a small lip up to the plastic. I did look at making one to sit on the outside of the gutter to eliminate that problem, but the inner profile where it meets the "wall" of the greenhouse doesn't allow it. Maybe I could make one where the bottom profile sits flush and stops as a "butt joint" to the gutter, and stick something over it to waterproof the joint. Or, maybe it's easier to file the edge so it's gradual rather than square like this one.
Mine's under a tree and as you can see, gets clogged up with all sorts of stuff that I sometimes remember to clear out. I'd also like to replace that length of heater hose with copper pipe, and maybe re-make the fitting in copper too.

I have a similar job to do on my greenhouse too...but it might end up being a 2026 project I think!

I've just been out to plant some of my lettuce into bigger pots as they're starting to get quite unruly. Opened my bag of compost to find that there's a load of ants in it, and more ant eggs on top. Is there anything I can do to salvage it? It's been in the greenhouse, and although the top was opened a while ago I've made a point of folding it over and weighing it down with a tray, but obviously not to ant-proof standards.
It was a mistake to put the seeds so close together as I've found it virtually impossible to split them, especially while trying not to touch them as advised earlier. I may end up having to write this batch off, or at least most of them, but I've planted a few more seeds individually in a compartmented seed tray now, four out of eight are showing. I've potted some on to individual pots, three into a single ceramic tray, and the rest directly into the garden with some wire netting over them - I expect these won't do anything at all other than feed stuff that can defeat the netting.

I wouldn't worry about the ants, they'll soon move out when you disturb them and start using the compost.
likewise, with the plants that are too close together just gently tease them apart and pot them on / plant them out. You'll have more plants than you need so just discard any that get broken or damaged as you go. They'll either grow or they won't and you've got nothing to loose.

^ Thanks, I'll give that a go. Earlier in the year it was more of a problem because I was using it for pots to come into the house, I guess I can now just use it in the greenhouse and hope they'll get the hint. I seem to have ants all over the place at the moment, I'm putting powder down all over the shop.

If you spread the compost on a board the ants will soon move the eggs.

My concern is where they'll move them to. I've already stuck a load of ant powder on a load of eggs on the edge of the vegetable patch, and they don't seem to be taking the hint. If I spread it on a board near the hedge across the back of the garden, perhaps they'll go next door.

Something a little exotic, a Spider Lily, Ismene Festalis. Planted 18 months ago but didn’t flower last year so thought they were duff.
I've been away for the weekend and come back to a bit of a soft fruit glut on the Allotment. This afternoon I've picked, 1.7kg of Strawberries, 700g of Raspberries and 600g of Blackcurrents, with plenty more to come.
I guess jam making will be tomorrow's job, because even I can't eat a kilo of Strawberries.

How lovely! I have had two bland raspberries, a few little strawberries and one bitter gooseberry so far. Perhaps I shouldn't have bothered! However, the blueberry bush looks like it might be OK in a few weeks time.

Opened my bag of compost the other day (which was full of ants and their eggs a few days ago) and they've all gone somewhere, so I can carry on using it to re-pot my chillies, in case they ever grow above 2".

They cluster around the stalk and eventually eat their way through it. Also sit under the leaves. Ants appear to be "tending" them.
So far I seem to be winning the battle by spraying with a mix of neem oil and agricultural soap in warm water. If I see a cluster I squirt then scrape them off and again squirt what's left of them.

Listening to Farming Today on R4 this morning they were discussing seaweed fertiliser. So I googled and I’ve found out it is very expensive as a gardening fertiliser and it is illegal to go and collect from the beach. Anyone using it?
A couple of hours yesterday saw all the soft fruit I picked from the allotment the other day made into jam.
6 jars of strawberry, 4 jars of raspberry and 2 of blackcurrant.
A spoonful of home made jam in my porridge is a real treat and makes me think of these long hot summer days in the middle of winter. Well worth the effort in my opinion.

You don't need to take the top off to put a tap in . Cut the hole at the correct sixed hole for the tap then push a 10 foot length length of wire cable up the hole and fish it out the filling hole having knotted the free end to stop you pulling it completely through . Slide the sealing washer & nut down the cable ire , tie a knot in the wire and use the knot to pull them to the wall of the barrel . Tke the tap apart thread the wire through the tap and whilst pulling the wire tight start to screw the tap into the nut . Once it is started , gently snip off the wire & pull it back through the tap & remove from barrel . Now play the game of working out how to pull the tap whilst turning it in the correct direction to tighten the nut .
Having the top still on the barrel keeps the mozzies out so they won't breed in the water & the top won't get blown off in a gale .
You can use the same method to insert solvent weldable link pipe to connect several barrels on a sound solid foundation ,once you get the spigot in place simply use a solvent welded sleeve to connect the two spigot pipes .
Bung this into eBay and have a forage as they can be under £9 a pair or get a pal to 3D print some for you
