How do I measure the threads then?

I've got a thread gauge now and one of them (I think it was the 14) fits nicely. How do I measure the diameter of the bolts though, i.e. I can put my callipers on them but then what should I round it to and where can I buy imperial bolts from?

didn't have a new battery for caliper 2 weeks ago and needed a few bolts off ebay,so I got me taps and dies out to see what the size was of existing bolt.

mind you won't work if you don't have a range imperial dies in your arsenal of taps and dies.

I resort to that method quite a bit too. The amount of times I'll check a bolt or stud up against its respective tap, just to double check.

I wish the bloke who fitted the propshaft to the car I'm working on had done that, he happily stuck an M6 bolt into a 1/4" UNF threaded hole.

interweb is full of them matey...this is why before i clear out old machinery i rape them of the nuts and bolts...bet they did,nt teach that at school did they?

Probably the same cretin who used Nyloc nuts to secure the half-shafts on my TVR. It's a Jag back axle with inboard brakes: the heat from the brakes melts the nylon, the nuts come loose and the back suspension falls off. Well OK, it could do, it hadn't actually done so... but it's common knowledge that you use stiff (aka Philidas) nuts instead of Nylocs.

Talking about taps, I found one out recently which i though was a 1/8 BSF but its way too big and although the HSS and made in england is clear enough the size is not. Whats the best way to check sizes of taps...Using thread gauges?? and vernier?

Thread gauge, even if you don't have a matching gauge you can identify the TPI and crosscheck online or in a zeus chart.

Tomorrow, I'm gonna take the motor off and open it up so I can try to rewire it, definitely will be needing your help with that.

Good, I'll rummage through my dads selection tomorrow.

It was quite a struggle but I've managed to get the motor out so I can do something with it.

Could someone please explain or give me a link about how to convert the motor?

I'm also considering replacing the motor with a single phase one, will the bolt pattern on the bottom be a standard thing that I can buy a new motor and bolt it straight on or will I need to make some kind of adaptor?

I've got a smaller motor (the one from the milking pump) that I might make up a mount for. It's much less powerful but it has a much smaller pulley on it so I'd imagine the torque would be much the same, just slower. I know it won't really be enough to do any real milling but it will be really nice to actually use the thing (even if I'm only machining wax).

I wouldn't swap to 1ph motor, once you've used the variable frequency adjustment on a VFD you'll not regret it

That's the same cheap Chinese one that I have but mine is the 4hp one, really happy with it, gets used weekly.
Loads of features to program if you need them and really easy to add remotes.
Only downside is the manual is in chinglish!

What do you mean by program, can you tell it to soft start or something?

There is about 6 pages of programming options!
Soft start
Soft stop
Ramp start/stop
DC braking
Over speed etc
Search for Huanyang inverter VFD manual, if you can't find it give me a shout and I will upload my copy.
