With Christmas coming up I should have enough money to buy a cheap machine tool so looking on ebay I've seen horizontal mills very cheap, much cheaper than vertical mills and slightly cheaper than most lathes I've looked at. I had always been under the impression that horizontal mills where huge, expensive beasts that serious machinists used. There's an Elliot in Wiltshire (too far from me) that has a head to be used as a vertical mill for under £150. My question is: With and without the vert head, how do they compare to a vertical mill like a Bridgeport?
Also, would it be possible to put a bit of metal in the spindle and use it as a rudimentary lathe?
