thats the plan i wont be doing much to the lathe until i get my V8 put together so it can sod off but im going to make a start derusting all the loose bits

Id rather have something that just does the job rather than lookinh like it belongs in a museum , nearly everything I own is from the 80's or earlier

Well it doesnt seem to be too much worse since I last saw it and its absolute beast for a 6" swing lathe, shame its not a gap bed but a 10th of the price of a Harrison or Colchester



Looks mostly like suface rust

I mean how hard is it to slap some old engine oil or grease onto machines if they are going to hang around un-used...shall we say 3 minutes tops? a pound of cooking lard would of helped if oil is not your thing

Perhaps it is , I need to move it to a better location tomorrow so I will check that out . I want to have a look inside the headstock that should give me a better idea if its worth continuing

I wish I had when he first offered it to me but his dad has a Harrison I was hoping to have which didnt work out then I forgot i agreed to have it. Hes had it in a tent for two years so tbh thats lucky as he would have left it outside if i wasnt interested in it

The QCTP is worth about 2,5 to three times what you paid for the lathe!! Get a gallon of diesel and paint it over the rust, then use a sharp blade like a SE razor blade or a stanley blade scraper, you will be amazed what difference an hour will make! Finish with fine scotchbrite and diesel, clean the paintwork with white spirit, looks like quality kit to me!!

Ok so had a quick look at what came with it , no more change wheels but some interesting stuff

1st up looks like some sort of collet system there an odd arrangment of rods and levers at the back so i think it works with that



some big drills mt4 down



not sure what this is



Theres an auto stop on the carriage im guessing this is for that



usefull looking knurler



a taper attachment (not as rusty as photo makes out



Chucks faceplate and a traveling steady no fixed one unfortunately

Lastly a bit of a result as was in a bag a usefull looking QCTP



Tomorrow start to derust some of it if I get time

I think I will give it a go on the chucks , do you reckon a circle of expanded mesh sheet would work ?

If you're not too far, I could slice off a few slabs of graphite, doesn't grow barnacles like scrap metal...

The lever thing is a collet closer. The lever mounts to the bar arangement fixed to the lathe. The large round bit on the rear end of the draw tube has a spring and a bearing. Next to the collets in the pic you have a flanged taper adapter that goes in the spindle taper and the collets fit in the adapter then the tube screws onto the collet, the spring loaded system holds the collet shut and you pull the lever to open it against the spring. You can insert parts into the collet with the machine running or stopped.

You can safely clean up that collet adapter and the collets with a wire wheel they are hardened and will take to it well.
