Difficult to say from here, for all I know it might clean up with an oily rag. Rust always looks bad but unless it's been eating away at the machine for years, might not be as bad as it looks. I would be looking for the least aggressive method first and if that doesn't work, escalate.

It'll be a collectors item if nothing else? If it works it's a plus. It's all down to time, which unfortunately shortens in old age. With time and inclination it's go-er. With heavy plant it's transportation costs that are the issue. I've learnt the hard way with tractors etc. If it's nearby all the better.

Its coming my way tomorrow or thursday whatever hes a good mate so for the price of an all day breakfast + hes just fitted a Hiab to his Ifor Williams so a chance to test it out with 800kg

looking at the lathe again i have 4 change wheels and it should only need 3 or 4 to operate so it should get it going the large one on the bottom is damaged though
at least i can work out what pitch etc is from whats on it

I know what your saying sometimes it looks terrible but wipes off but ive seen worse brought back to useable

No, that's normal. Many lathes use changewheels coupled with a gearbox.

It would be helpful if you could post a pic of the threading plate that's readable but typically the change-gears wil allow you to switch between coarse and fine or metric and inch threads, or even DP and module on some machines. It keeps the gaearbox simple.
As for your de-rusting - get down to screwfix and buy a couple of these. Fit one on a vari-speed mini grinder, wear gloves, goggles and overall and just hit everything that's rusty with it:

You don't have to worry about ruining any surface that's already rusty because, well, it's already rusty and you won't change anything dimensionally with such a soft wheel so there's nothing to lose and a whole lot of time to gain. Just make sure you do the bed to one side of the carriage before you move that carriage or you'll iron oxides stuck under the saddle which WILL grind away at the ways.

yeah that was the best image i could find so far of the the change wheel set up, but yiu can zoom in on it
shame this wasnt clearer
but this bit is good enough to get the teeth numbers for the gears im missing
