Cheers guys, it’s quite satisfying having a part in my hand I made like that.
The knurling was my first ever go i just went for it thinking I’d just make another part if I messed it up. I was thinking how far to go and just stopped when it felt “grippy” enough. Good info about the diamond shape that makes sense.
I have no idea here so any feedback extremely welcome. I’m working my way through 3M of 20mm round playing with tools, speeds and feeds and just getting a general feel. This was the first time I actually turned to dimensions.
This part Replaces a nylon effort that’s stripped its threads.
I have a thumb nut to make for the change wheel housing and a handle for the gear selector which I may attempt next.

Very nice.
Back from working away decided to try screw cutting and I broke the lathe :-(
Well maybe a bit of a overdramatic statement it was intirely predictable. Remember a few pages back I identified the shear pin was bent/damaged for the screw drive. It snapped on the first shallow cut. I’ll have a go at making one I think before ordering!
Here’s the M10 thread attempt, pitch was right against my guage which is one thing, don’t have any 60 degree cutters yet.

I keep mine on, cut down on suds flying all over the place.
If you're going to move it again I slid some bits of stainless plate under my 280 and slid it on that. 180 degree turn around and over to the other side of the garage into position easily.

Looking forward to seeing your panel as it progresses.
Grabbed an hour and knocked up a temporary panel just to hold the buttons through the programming/configuration stage. Was worth while as I learnt I need to tweak the final layout to accommodate the button chassis on the back its pretty cramped with my intended spacing.

This part of the rebuild is pure magic to me. I have no idea how to do all of this, it looks amazing though!

I’m a geek and I like buttons :-)
Start, stop, jog, fwd/Rev, speed control and emergency stop make up the six on the right.
Top left is main power on button, interlock clear pilot light and fault light.
There will be additional switch for coolant then a spindle speed display and VFD remote.

Seems ok went for this one from RDGtools. I was going round in circles looking at second hand Pratt Bernerd and BISON and thought for my skill level this should be more than enough. I slotted it on this evening and in seems a good fit cant say more than that at the moment. What it does do is allow me to start tuning the lathe a bit better I have it level but suffer a slight taper over 20mm. That 3 jaw was very rough and I thought pointless trying to do finer setup with it, at least now I can get test piece dead centre before going further.
Also wired up some of the buttons tonight just to get the logic sorted on the VFD. The VFD has 300 pages of setup parameters, took half a dozen changes so far but got it into external mode, momentary switch mode, 3wire control mode etc so I now have external start, stop and direction working. Will work on e stop and interlocks tomorrow then the JOG/speed control. After that ill install the braking resistor to then start tuning for the motor acceleration, deceleration, braking etc
not pretty at the moment this is purely a bench test setup but nice to have some proper buttons!

It's great to see your progress. The panel is going to look superb.
It's a good idea to breadboard your vfd and get it all working as you want. I did the same and parameterised the vfd before fitting the motor to the lathe.
Is that one of the D1-3 camlock chucks from RDG? I keep meaning to get a bigger 3 and 4 jaw. Also as an aside, a self centring 4 jaw is a useful thing to have.

@Carl Wilson yes it’s the direct fit d1-3 chuck with no back plate. Haven’t used it yet but seems good enough. Nice fit on the lathe and the jaws have a nice action. I can now look to restore the 3jaw. I can see how a 4 jaw self centering could also be handy. I’m also interested in a collect chuck too.
Re the VFD there are so many parameters and options for wiring it’s inevitable there will be multiple revisions so thought this the best approach. Once I have the Beta panel working I’ll use it for a while to make sure the user experience is good then have a panel properly printed.
