I would love George to get the drive for 2 weekends. BUT I am not sure it's in his interest......It could end up being but would Merc risk him beating Bottas with him tied to Williams for another year?

Hopefully that is one of the things the FIA will be looking into. It does seem strange that a “supposedly solid” barrier was in use at that point. As you say the TecPro would have absorbed a large amount of the energy making the accident a lot less severe.

The issue is he went into that barrier at and angle that just wouldn't be expected in a normal race. Someone out of control would normally be heading for the outside of the bend not the inside.

The one thing that was very lucky was the fact the safety car was following and was on the scene immediately

Its another interesting point UKR as was it a flash fuel fire or was it a larger fuel fire, or was it in part, a lithium ion battery fire which means there is nothing currently available to extinguish li-on fires, you just let them burn out.

IMHO a flash fuel fire followed by larger fuel fire. To be honest its a pure guess as I dont know anything about the batteries they run and in deed the fuel other than its racefuel.

There is always that, there is also the non stop evolution of the cars where new bits are constantly being thrown at them in a bid to keep ahead of the opposition. Sometimes they are a step forward and sometime they are not,with a limit on testing these bits go on the race cars, at Mercedes I would bet a pound to a pinch of salt the dubious experimental bits until proven go to the number two car and driver first.

We will never know...IMHO But what would be more interesting is lewis in the Red bull....

That would be interesting because it is clear Max is able to extract the absolute maximum out of a car and that's not taking anything away from Lewis.

I've always thought it would be really cool to have a feature race where drivers drove a different teams car. They would have to sort some sort of points system that meant it wasn't in a team or drivers interest to affect the results.

The bit that has always amused me about top end motorsport is the fact that it's all about winning yet when someone is winning everyone wants to change it so that everyone can win. To me it's like me be doing loads of overtime and then my company paying everyone else the same to make it fair.

Russell was Mercedes reserve driver in 2018 before they released him to Williams on a three-year contract from the start of the 2019 season, and is highly rated by the team as a candidate for a potential future drive.

I thought he was a dead man, for sure. Just shows how much secondary safety has improved over the years. Apart from anything else the halo undoubtedly saved his life. And the marshals reacted brilliantly. Having said all that, the onboard footage from Kvyatt's car made you wonder what Grosjean was thinking when he pulled the manoeuvre that caused the accident. It's maybe best for all concerned that he's not got a drive for 2021.

It was interesting as the safety barrier was basic armco which is, by design, flawed. It was also installed incorrectly for F1 and other high speed motorsports as it was only ever designed for shallow angle impacts at fairly low speeds, i.e. motorway speeds with vehicles travelling in the same direction.

Armco was originally designed for motorway work and to deflect a vehicle into its original path and to prevent it going into the path of oncoming vehicles on the other side of the carriageway be it dual carriageways or motorways as closing speeds of vehicles head on would be 140MPH minimum and keeping the vehicle in the same path as it was originally travelling would reduce closing speeds by half or 70 MPH and allow those following the vehicle time to brake or take evasive action, or even become involved in a much less serious accident in which people would walk away. Originally Armco was designed to be interlocking so the first section locked to the second section and so on, this allows the impacted piece of Armco to dissipate the impact energy across numerous sections and to have no gaps in it; this Armco was bolted together with huge gaps in it and as it was designed for fairly bluff fronted road cars it was never designed for F1 cars which, by design are chisel shaped for aerodynamic efficiency and you end up with a 600kg F1 car with an additional 100kg of fuel hitting it at 140MPH with its wedged nose going straight into the gap between the sections.

Here in the UK Armco was mounted on 12" square wooden posts set in concrete and a combination of the Armco and timber posts absorbed a lot of energy, it we combine this with the fact that motorways and dual carriageways have runble strips in the form of cats eyes at there outer edge, and at the edge of the road surface you have aggregate of some type, often roadstone, a motorway driver has warning he is going off the road and the aggregate absorbs a lot of energy and slows the vehicle down even though it draws the vehicle into the Armco and this is at a very shallow angle. It was never ever designed for F1 angles of impact or speeds.

If they fitted conveyor belting across the front of the Armco it would have prevented him penetrating it, if they had some form of backing protection it would have helped prevent him penetrating it, and if they had overlapped the Armco as it was originally designed there would be no gaps for the nose of the car to penetrate, not rocket science is it.

I remember seeing wire rope barriers in Thailand 30 years ago, and thinking to myself how lucky we are not to have such dangerous and primitive stuff in England.....

Hamilton will be kicking himself as hard as he can he rattles around in his luxury penthouse, suddenly F1's no longer the Lewis Show [all about me ] as someone else gets a chance to shine.

That said, I don't grudge him his success as he'a brilliant pilot, but it's almost become "Do as I say or I'll shame you into doing it", It's just, as a sport which needs widespread popularly and the revenues such generates, in order to survive the huge amounts of cash with which it's awash, it has for years become...well...processional and a bit boringly predictable.

This from someone who never missed a race, even getting up in the middle of the night to watch the Japanese race live.

Yes, I used to marshall Moto X back in the 70’s, but rope and sticks at least have some give... more than steel wire and girders anyway.
