I got 5.25kwh of heat output in the hot water and put in 6.4kwh of gas.

So I the system is 82% efficient, the type of boiler is not relevant in the equation.

In a heating season (maybe not just now!) a good % of the 18% heat might not be wasted though if its an internal boiler, it's heating the internal envelope of the house.

France price limits are mainly down to the fact their utility suppliers are state owned, their government is footing the bill. From an article below…

"Somewhere like Germany has looked to scrap surcharges on its electricity bills. France has done something quite different, because it's got a nationalised energy supplier with EDF, it's taken quite a different tack in terms of limiting bill hikes to only 4 per cent. The government is essentially forcing EDF to sell electricity from its nuclear plants at a below market rate to other suppliers. So that's something we can't do in the UK. We got rid of our nationalised energy system a long time ago.”

EDF are having big problems in France. They are hugely in debt to around €60bn, the French government are buying the rest of the share, currently they own around 81%. The nuclear power stations are old and suffering with nearly half down fir maintenance, the cost of which is likely to push the debt over €100bn.

Hardly expoitation, BP accept what others are prepared to pay for their products. Couple of years ago nobody wanted petrol/diesel and they made a loss. As for electric companies, depends on what you mean, the ones you pay for your electricity, made a loss last year, which is why many went broke, because the price cap was lower than what they had to pay their suppliers for electricity. The "big six" mostly survived because they generate electricity too, so while the retail side made a paper loss, the generator side mostly made much more profit. Gas generators didn't, as they had to pay more for gas but Nuclear and the renewables costs didn't go up much, so got a windfall. I assume this is what the windfall tax will fall on. The energy market was always flawed. Right from privatisation it was never going to work for the benefit of consumers. Because gas generation costs more, the retailers were willing to pay the renewable generators more. However the renewable generators were getting all sorts of incentives to grow, that is what the "green levy" is for, so consumers end up paying the green levy which producers no longer need, extra standing charges, to upgrade the system, which the green levy was also for, and more for their electricity, part of which is supposed to be going into "investment in infrastructure" so consumers pay three times for the same thing, neat trick.

There is a hidden "trick" to profit and loss accounts - profit does not include the "costs" of running a company.

"Cost" DOES include salaries.

The salaries some of these company executives decide to pay themselves would make a Premiere league footballer blush...

With a heat pump correctly set up gas/electric costs are about parity currently. The medium term projections are that electricity will fall faster than gas, but those projections might as well come from a crystal ball at the minute.

No proponent of electricity will claim it's cheaper than gas using direct methods, that's more dreamed up nonsense those who prefer their houses heated with coal and their children infected with scabies and polio say

Correct. A lot has to do with transmission losses.( 60% or something ridiculous?) So it has to be more economical for heating. Conversion to other forms of energy is what lowers effiency.

Just had an email from Shell Energy about the impending price cap rise, the interesting bit is they state the price cap applies to energy unit cost so they shouldn't be increasing the daily standing charge this time like the nearly 50% hike last time, we shall see.

A lot of commercial customers have had the standing charge put up massively, it isn't covered by any of the funding we can get, only the unit price

Looks about right. It's a scam.

As I said earlier, the costs of wages, salaries and bonuses are NOT included in the profit and loss account.

So the fat cats just hand themselves massive salaries, bonuses, share options you name it then moan about "the company" making a loss.

Naturally they have a few billion spare to hand out to their shareholders but tbh, people like that would be just as happy to burn money if it made their accounts look better.

Same people will ALSO hide their money in offshore accounts so that they don't even have to pay a fair share of tax to the country they owe EVERYTHING to...

What they don’t point out as it doesn’t suit the agenda is that most folk who work in a largish company get shares as part of a salary deal now and again.

Indeed, we are able to pick up the crumbs that fall off the table. Most of the actual wealth is being greedily stuffed into the mouths of the super rich.

Farmers are next on the list. Property has dried up, the super rich are after the ground beneath our fee. All the preparations are in place, they literally just have to press the right buttons and the farming community (especially their lands!) will be absorbed into the giant equity firms and global corporations.

I was driving into work this morning thinking about all of this ^ and it stinks, stinks very bad but the small man or woman can do very little about it UNLESS we have a revolution!
I'm not kidding it's the only thing I can come up with that will truly rock the rotten core of the establishment. Smash a few rich heads really tear the place up. I mean we don't have much to loose now as everything has gone tits up from the NHS, policing, food and building material costs then to CAP it all off energy costs!
I really do think people will freeze or starve to death this winter while these greedy xxxxs just get richer.
If I was young enough to have kids again I wouldn't do it, I wouldn't want to put all this on their head's. I feel guilty for what my boys will have to deal with when gone and don't forget, when you die the bastard's will tax you for that too

They made a loss of $20.4 billion in the first quarter of 2022and $10billion profit the second quarter, no wonder CEOs make so much being the god level business men they are to make a company failing in the tune of $80 billion dollar losses a year and turn it into a $40billion dollar a year profit! That's an effective annual increase of $120billion dollars!!!!!!! It's almost unbeleivable.....
