The plier type tool is just to lift the shim out of the follower, a small pick type tool and an extendable type magnet tool will work . I have a VW/ Audi tool somewhere that might do the job ? If I can find it your welcome to borrow it , along with the tools to lower the followers that may or may not work on yourI need a shim removal tool like this View attachment 439542

You need to make sure pistons are nowhere TDC before you start depressing cam followers.

Just had 3 injectors back from Colchester fuel Injection for a generator engine. All three tested, overhauled, new nozzles fitted. £52 each plus VAT. Replacement new injectors were available for £150 plus VAT each so quite a saving. Excellent service. Returned within a week of dropping them off.

Make sure the screw driver isnt one of those that pushes into a handle…..nothing worse than trying to get your end out of a hole!I suppose with the injectors out I can just poke a screwdriver down the hole to check where the pistons are.

I have the new tool and it seems to fit ok. Regarding the piston positions I've poked a coat hanger down the injector hole but it seems to stop in the same place on every cylinder so I think it's hitting the wall of the inlet tract and not touching the piston. The manual says position the cam lobs upward then fit the tool so I'm assuming it's then safe to compress the valve?

I've just tried this and it indeed does compress the valve buckets but it acts on both at the same time on the cylinder it's used on, when I look at the top picture above the tool is only acting on one valve at a time so I assume you do them one at a time 
I tried it on No1 cylinder and got both shims out but I'm bloody hoping I've not damaged anything!
So I've taken the cam shaft out

You would normally only do them one at a time as it might not be necessary to re shim both. I don’t think it would have done any harm, just takes more effort to compress two sets of springs, maybe the portion of the tool you have that acts on the bucket is just too wide?

The whole point of the tool you have now got is it allows the shims to be removed without taking the cam out making adjusting the valve clearances a few minutes work, rather than hours.

Yes I know but I can't find any information on what the cam position should be before compressing both valves in a cylinder, (it might be a "safe" engine in which case it doesn't matter but I doubt it) the manual says cam lobe pointing upwards but it's phrased as one singular cam lobe not a pair and I think doing that with the other cylinders makes it impossible to do as the lobes are pointing all over the place.

Just as well as one of the oil leaks was the joint behind the seal plate behind the cam sprocket.

Top of the engine is back together with new shims fitted, all the clearances are within spec now although one of the inlets is at 0.29 mm where 0.30 is the max, it was that or a bit too close to being tight so as it will only close up with mileage it's ok.
Service kit arrived on Friday and today my refurbished injectors from Diesel Bob.
He said the spray pattern was wrong and that they were opening at a low pressure so I'm hoping that's the problem fixed...

Complete with the sealing and leak off washers but those copper ones weren't on there before and aren't on the parts microfiche.
Normally come with a washer and a heat shield, have a dig about in the head.
