just re read the full thread, have you given all the injectors a good bleed ? if so and you are getting smoke when trying to start it, I would try towing it off. some are just stubborn

Tow it.

Had a Sprinter that refused to start on the key, low and behold a 15ft tow and she struck up.

Different matter on a Defender though, stubborn barstewards!

Don't assume the timing is right, even through it was pinned.
The head timing marks will line up on either 1 or 4. As will the cam, so it is advisable to double check.
Carry out the rule of 9 to check.
Is the battery fully charged?
Does the oil pressure light go out?
Are they hydraulic tappets? If they are you will find a small hole in the head near the base. Pump a lot of oil, from a can to prime them.
Double check your fuel lines as a small leak will give a non start.
Did you change the fuel filter, it is not unknown a new one to have a air leak. I know to my experience.

It's a single cam with a keyed sprocket so can only be in one position and has a hole which you bolt it to the head and the pump has two bolts all have to line up for the pin to go into the flywheel so i can't see how it could be wrong but if there is a way I need to be told how. I have bleed the system and cranked for ages while checking for leaks did have one on the pump where the accelerator lever goes in but that seems to have stopped. Oil light goes out and I don't have anyone to tow it.

Yes we have had some smoke nice and black apart from when i stuck some easy start down it then it was white.

Where the valve seats cut back? If so have the valves been tipped and/or adjusted to reset lash?

I bought a 306 td as a non runner many years ago, the head had just been done and the owner couldn't get it to start, I found the machine shop must have had the cam followers out and put them back in random order! I only had to get two shims ground to get all the valves to close, after that it ran a treat.

I took the buckets and shims out in order and cleaned and numbered them.

My wife remembered our mate over the back of the estate had a van so just towed it and got it going although that took some doing but have had it start on the key now.

Took it for a run sounds quite tappy and there is an amount of white smoke, think this is fuel build up in the exhaust.

Hi, White smoke is unburnt fuel, so take it for a run and get it hot and see if it clears. If not check the pump timing it doesn't need to be out much to cause it. The other causes are faulty injectors or low compression, so the pump timing is the cheapest to fix.

works 9 times out of 10 on diesels when you've double checked everything and scratching your head

OK you say you kept the bucket shim order? but if it sounds tappy that sounds like you have extra clearance in some of the buckets, as diesels generally wear tight due to valve seat resession, I think you have got the shim order wrong and have ended up with extra clearance on some valves , extra on some means tight on others, just check the valve clearance it is simple.
The white smoke could be due to low compression on the pots with the tight tappets .

Going back to your first post you stated that a saver shim was fitted, surely that would mean that all the valve clearances would have to checked and reshimed if needed ?

Nah white smoke is excessive over fuelling or unburnt fuel, used to get it a lot on big diesels when the induction hoses collapsed in on themselves

Oil produces blue smoke, coolant produces steam which disappears, smoke drifts away.

Black smoke is indeed excess fuel, white smoke is incomplete combustion.
