Darn humidity

wanted a powerful one because used it for drying cloths, moved and have a heat pump tumble dryer now so don't really use it


put it on in the house last week when I went out 8am, when I got back at 6pm the tank was full... no idea how long it took to fill it (4litres) - gauge said it was about 45% humidity

had a problem with damp in a bathroom so I've been standing it on the toilet with the drain pipe into the toilet, it works really really well, dried it out nicely


tbh the tank is a bit small for any real use, needs the drain tube on it

There's nothing in the thread to say it was a new dehumidifier, just that it was a replacement, heritage unclear, at the time of posting, until Brad mentioned it was new after my post.

Lol, he wrote it was new twice, so that's what I took it to mean. And do homebase sell used ones?

Humidity has dropped a little



It collected about 1.2L



Running cost is quite high or more than I thought it would be at least.



£1.70 per 24 hrs roughly. This was on Auto setting where it had the fan speed high.

I changed it to normal mode now and low fan speed so will see if the running costs stabilise and reduce a little in the next couple of days. Here's hoping!

One major drawback of this particular unit is that the delay timer seems like it will need set each day. And if you switch it on at wall it still needs the button depressed to start. So running it off a timer is not possible.

There are some WiFi / app based ones may be better. For me I'll have to either run this one 24hrs or not at all.

yeah.... wasn't bad for drying cloths because once the humidity in the cupboard under the stairs (where I kept it with cloths on a cloths horse) dropped low enough it turned off

I figure it's the same for anything else... if it drys the place in an hour then turns off it's no different from one that runs for 6 hours to do the same thing


ok.. there'll be efficiency differences in them... but that'll be lost to the background noise anyway

You'll need to sort out leaks before worrying about running a dehumidifier for any sustained period. If humid air can be pulled in from outside easily then you're in a lose lose situation.

My workshop was like that until we finished off the office upstairs. Roof is all insulated and any gaps filled, windows in and sealed. The old air vents from the stable era cut circles of cellotex to plug. There's still a small gap above the roller shutter but it's blocked by the brick arch so wind can't blow directly in.

The difference in the humidity inside has been astonishing despite living in South West Wales where our next neighbours to the South West are the Falklands.

Im also 900ft up a welsh hill. My new barn was ventilated at he eaves, so tracked outside humidity rather well.

Last winter, my first here, a lot of stuff suffered.

Ive just sealed it all up, though roof insulation still to do. Planted 3 dessicant dehumidifiers. Only been a week, but already down from 95% to 70. Warm it isnt, and cant be until i do the roof, but it will be dry, and everything will not go rusty.

Well either the condensate is in the tub or on the floor, assuming the "blockage" is a water one.
Crikey, I wouldn't believe semi intelligent grown up people could make such a mountain out of a molehill. It's only a dehumidifier, after all?

dehumidifier ran all day yesterday, stopped
due to being full at some point in the night.

minimal condensation on the windows, i've flicked it back on smart mode to do what it will.

My dehumidifier collected zero water in the last 24 hrs!

Taking the drawer out I note its frozen up. I guess my garage temp is outside its operating scope



What I did learn is that if its on and you turn it off at wall it does then restart automatically without pressing buttons.

So it should work off a mechanical timer utilising my economy 7 electric at night. I'll allow it to defrost then from tomorrow night onwards it can come on automatically at night and collect water and even if it does frost up a little it will have time to drain out before the next night.

I do use heating in this garage (blast heater or mainly the China diesel heater) so at weekends and evenings when I can the temp does go up to mid teens in winter.

Not really sure how you work that out? Sounds like an internet myth. Yes, it generates heat, but thats good. Because i want heat. States on it the looad consumption.

Ive found them highly effective, and capable of working down to zero degrees. Even if it is a bit more expensive, in a garage/workshop etc, it actually works, whereas a conventioal one doesnt and spends all its time defrosting.

Agreed, running costs are more - but not necessarily ‘many’ times. Cost per unit volume of water collected is the real criterion? I can repair my cheap desiccant dehumidifiers, but cheap compressor types, which might soon lose their refrigerant gas, are basically scrap when they start leaking.

I’m like Roger440 - I need the heat (to maintain my workshop temperature well above dew point) as well as relatively low humidity to avoid any condensation/corrosion. Works for me.

‘Orses for courses seems likely a good way to describe type selection. It's not always a clear cut choice.

I can't fault my compressor one, over 25 yrs old and works like new. Only times I've had an issue was down to dust. It also generates some heat, which is not a bad thing.

Brad is right, I've run both before

pulling the same litres/day out of the air in the same room, a desiccant one noticeably warms the room.... they have heaters in them, where the only heat you get from a compressor one is waste heat from the compressor and the fan

My workshop is insulated, Roof, walls, doors, window is double glazed. I have no issues with humidity at all. A small stove keeps it toasty warm.
But my car gets a damp or wet dog in it every day & At the moment needs wipers on the inside.

Same could be said of my front insulated garage. Highly insulated cavity wall construction adjoining house and double glazed windows, insulated sectional door.

However whilst I do not have visible moisture issues it will still benefit from dehumidifiers. In that case I have placed a few chemical type ones around that garage and they will collect water during winter months.

The difference will be very minor granted but it will be there. So if I had bare steel exposed on a car weld repair for a week humidity controlled it should not rust at all. But without that it would still flash rust. Minor but for me still worth improving where possible.

There are other garages and sheds which will have visible humidity problems and those will require more intervention of course.

Hi guys looking for some information have an old garage few years back I had the roof replaced .Few weeks ago I noticed the joists we soaking I thought there is leak maybe with the screws or something else but then there was no rain last few days and they are still soaking so I'm thinking is it condensation the temperature inside is minus its freezing .Have posted a picture. If it is condensation should I insulate at joists any recommendations

don't insulate them, better off leaving them open to let them breath

if you want to insulate you'll have to insulate ontop of the roof (so insulation/another roof ontop)
