Darn humidity

This little vice arrived about a week ago and the seller had wire brushed the top jaws.

Spotted it rusting actively in my unheated utility room today. The room is sopping wet really from the humidity blowing in from the door being opened for washing machine access etc. Horrible stuff.



Moved it into my back garage and cleaned that part again before applying tool wax and then a layer of oil.



Things don't tend to rust my back garage it's quite dry.

I haven't went out to my Clarke temporary garage but I bet I'll need to turn its dehumidifier on again asap in this weather.

This time of year it's completely depressing walking into my unheated workshop and seeing £10ks of machinery absolutely sopping wet and rusting anywhere i haven't covered in oil. I get absolutely religious about keeping the lathe and mill and press brake tooling clean and sprayed with oil. It's easier to clean oil than it is rust.

Guilty as charged, the little one looks good beside the other one

Its really to give off about the humidity we have this time of year. (We like to give off about weather OK so go with it)

It wasn't about the vices there are threads on here about that already.

Its about damp on tools and anything people want to discuss in that respect as it happens this time of year

Opening my garage roller door would result in shelves and cars becoming sopping wet in minutes. It's crazy.

What oil do you spray on? My stuff is all small tools really but some metal on the pillar drill and bandsaw tables could do with longer term treatment.

Tool wax seems to work well. I used a squirty can of engine oil to rub on the vices this evening in addition to the wax. (May add strips of wax paper on top of the oil if I get around to restoring a few more vices)

I have packets of those cheap disposable dehumidifier things you get in bargain shops. I usually place a couple of them inside my classic cars that have to live outside during winter. They do fill up over a winter.

I may place some around my garages and see if they pick up much.

I've noticed this too the last few days. Open the toolbox at work and everything's covered in condensation. Even getting in cars that've been inside overnight, the inside of the windscreen's soaking.

Luckily the garage at home is heated so most of my tools are unaffected.

I see your point, depending on the size of your garage would depend on how many would be beneficial, I used to use these things in the house, yes they all filled up, it didnt stop the issue I had though, I think I would have needed to spend a fortune to get any benefit, I now have a dehumidifier, which helps..... only helps, good luck and I hope they cure your issue.

I have those car ones they work well.

Do place them in the microwave every month or so. It's amazing how much steam and water comes back out of them and it recharges them for the next month.

just spray your stuff with ac50 and cover it up with sheets

Bilt Hamber Atom Mac is useful, as a rust inhibitor. It doesn't seem cheap, but one bottle goes a long way.
