hi, nice trailer you might need to beef up the winch support as the red line, me over engineering it would spit the load and do the green lines, as the winch will try to bend forward and down.

I'm with Rusty on beefing up to split the load, I'd add as per Rusty's added parts, but also run a couple of short lengths back to each side of the A-frame. maybe sound a bit OTT, better safe than sorry Algie, a lot of stress on winch when hauling up a motor.

Cheers for the up. Have got the chance of a twin axle caravan for £50 of a mate so I am going to sell this and start another transporter.The next owner can add to it.I have put it on fleabay with a reserve of £800 That should more than pay for my next one,If it doesnt sell for the reserve at least I will know roughly what I can expect for it.Will keep you posted on events Thanks

Is using an 'A' frame illegal in the UK unless the car being towed is taxed and insured ?

Also anyone know what happened to this, did he sell it ? the guy seems to have dissapeared.

It's illegal to use an A-frame, the car becomes a trailer and it must have brakes on all wheels if weight is greater than 750 Kg.

That was the concensus after a long debate on the LR4x4 forum. To transport a vehicle any distance it has to be on a trailer, flat-back or specs-lift or similar. Those wheeled towing dollies are also illegal.

Tow ropes and suchlike are only to be used in emergencies for moving an immobile vehicle to the nearest place of safety, eg, from the central crash barrier to the hard shoulder of a motorway.

I still use an A frame, and have never been pulled so far. Everything I've towed has been less than 750kg, but you'd not expect the police to know that, eh? One of the dealers I know regularly uses one to tow VWs and Audis which weigh in excess of a tonne about.

I think that the rules say that if the trailer has brakes that they have to work

but i can put a 2cv on a light trailer and if the lot weighs less than 750kg it doesn't need to have any brakes at all

my little 2cv's weigh less than 750kg when i'm towing (never had any hassle from the boys in blue)

and the AA/RAC still use them to move cars

i think you'll find a dolly is a widely used term for lots of towing types.

Mine is the "traditional" A frame -- fastens to the wishbones of the car being towed (and to the tow hitch of the towing vehicle) and the steering of the car being towed is "free" (steering lock unlocked) so that it actually steers. All 4 wheels of the car are on the ground.

There great for moving cars as long as you take great care

I know that a few people have had their cars punted off the road in the wet

and remember your are in effect towing a quite a large unbraked trailer

Noooo!!! it's against the law to have anybody riding in anything used as a trailer

the car only weighs around 600kg so the tow car has no problems pulling & stopping

You can't legally. Unless it's under 750kgs, or the A frame is braked, or it's to recover a broken down vehicle

Different rules I thing cos the campers that do that are much heavier with higher rated breaks.
