Building a portable speaker

My active speakers I got for holiday, the ones I linked too earlier have built in amps and are fantastic on 5" drivers,
I like BASS but dont run these on full base coz the response is that good

new stuff is designed specifically to produce the bass with bigger voice coils and a greater excursion but use old stuff and you will kill it

I can play with what I have laying around for free, if it's crap then no harm done, I can take what I've learnt and buy better speakers.

years and years ago I tried using some wharfdales I had, they did produce good bass but trying to get more from them just didn't work

don't go there low oxygen cable, yet another gimmick, sure it may make it last longer but that's it

WELL, My wifes amplifier/speaker works very well and that was developed using a high oxygen design -------and man that is LOUD I think she has a fitted oxy cyl coz she doesnt need to stop for breath.

yeah that's the downfall of women they can make loud audible noise and it drives us mad

its no use the more you ignore it the worse it gets, when women don't get an answer the auto volume kicks in.
just like their monthly cycle they will mow you down with it

I did a little testing with my dad's old Sony amp.

The tweeters have been removed as they were well and truly FUBAR'd. I was very happy with the bass from it but it really lacked in the higher range.
The Boston ones sounded great but lacked bass... Can you see where I'm going with this?
Here's the Boston drivers:

The bigger one was wired directly to the input, the smaller one was wired in series with this:

The amp has posts for two pairs of speakers with a selector to choose which, including both at once but because you cannot vary the volume of each pair, the Optimus drowned out the Boston but I think they could both donate their drivers and make something really good.

So now I'm back to thinking a three way design as I have three different drivers. Should the space behind each different driver be common to them all or isolated from one another? Is there a formula to calculate the correct volume of said space that I would understand?

Here's all the drivers:

4", 3" and 2 1/4"
They would all fit in a box of 12" x 6" x 5", it would be tight and probably without enough room to fit the amp(s) and battery but it wouldn't need to be much bigger.
I'm also thinking about stereo VS mono again.

What makes you think you will be able to integrate all those speakers into something that will make a decent sound? It seems just like putting your hand in blind bag and seeing what comes out.

Forget 3 way, pointless waste of space with those drivers. Use the Optimus bass and Boston tweeter with its capacitor. Make the box the same size as the Optimus box.

It will be pretty poor but I guess it's what you are prepared to do.

The small Boston tweeter will fit in where the old Optimus one came out. Should I keep the capacitor from the Boston or the capacitor-resistor combo from the Optimus or both?

No reason, I just thought it would.

The actual drivers and crossovers are really tricky which really should be worked out for specific driver specification against enclosure and then no doubt some tweaking. Randomly picking drivers and mixing them is going to end in something pretty poor TBH.

As you said the Optimus was a lot louder than the Boston I would just use the capacitor.

I've had a bit of a change of heart. Once I've bought the amp, built the case and sorted the battery I'll be a fair bit out of pocket and it could still sound crap. It'll also be big and heavy, so...



I'm just going to buy a Jawbone Jambox. It'll inevitably sound better, be cheaper, look nicer and fit in my bag, maybe even my pocket. I would have liked to build one but for all the reasons above and that I've got other projects on the go anyway, I'm not going to. Sorry for wasting everyone's time helping me.

If we'd told him that at the outset instead of letting him find out for himself, he wouldn't have believed us though.
