Poss run it off the power supply but my bluetooth head set works ok for hrs.

Class D is efficient but as a switching amp on really suitable for subs
As for speaker vs amp, I run 200ish wrms through some 85w comps, and 300wrms through a pair of 80w mini subs
I have had some smelly coils but only when being silly with cross overs

I have been challenged to do the above. It's because I said the Beats pill has poor bass, my friends all retaliated saying how great Beats audio is, blah blah blah
. Anyway, I (Maybe quite foolishly) said I could build a better one, they bet I couldn't so now if I make a good speaker, I get £20
(Next to nothing compared to what I'll spend on it but that's beside the point).
I'll be building everything; cabinet, amp, crossovers...
It needs to be portable, I think the biggest I could probably go would be about 4" x 4" x 10", roughly the same size as the big jambox. I'm currently thinking of an upright thing with tweeters and midrange drivers facing left and right and a single low range driver on the front but nothing is for certain yet.
I'm on a very tight budget so I need recommendations for decent, yet cheap, components. I don't know if the cabinet should be just a box holding everything or some fancy thing with ports and all that nonsense, considering it'll be used outdoors and really just needs to be loud
Any good reading material regarding this? Any thoughts?
Mate, I'm doing exactly the same thing and awaiting for parts to arrive from various far eastern places that ebay sellers use. I've got a class D amp, which will run some full ranges and has controls for sub crossover etc etc. drop me a PM and I will be more than happy to help, in the mean time Google Boominator and it should give you plenty of food for thought

First of all you need to decide what frequency you want it to be efficient at (within the drivers specs), this will dictate the box size and you will probably get a smaller box by porting it, you will also need a driver that you can obtain the thiele and small parameters for if you want it to be very efficient, download a program called win isd it will do the calculations for you as long as you have the data for the speaker, don't forget that crossovers and other drivers all reduce the volume of the enclosure
How about using a practice guitar amp as a starting point ? That way you get a cabinet usually with a handle on top, single speaker, amp, plenty of room for batteries if you want it truly portable, etc etc, might only be 10-20 watts but they will be proper RMS watts not "PMPO" rubbish.

good idea but guitar amps don't produce any good usable bass they are designed more mid bass

you could be right as I don't think he is going to get 40hz with a small budget and certainly not with a small enclosure

For the input voltage you are looking at (24V max) then both amps will put out the same power.
Parts Express is where I was alluding to in my earlier post about getting great drivers from the USA.
I would avoid hifi speakers and any others that you don't have what are called Thiele-Small parameters for. If you want to beat the Beats in a compact enclosure you are going to need a special sub driver and a proper box design.
The ESP P05 is a popular active crossover and would be Ok for your application.
Have a think if it really needs to be stereo, I bet your friends wouldn't notice if it was mono. That makes the design easier and brings the cost down. I would look to use a 2 inch or 3 inch full range driver (possibly a pair wired in parallel) and a sub driver, probably 5 inch. With either a passive radiator or port if you can get creative with box and wood cutting.

A pair of subs will perform better in mono, in stereo there is a chance that the wave form can cancel each other out also you need to make sure they are in phase

That would be great if you have some. I've got a nice box with loads of chips in, I just can't be bothered to find out what they all areI guess now would be as good a time as any.
I'll have a dig round and see what I have.

Thinking about it you could put two speakers one front one rear and run them out of phase and make a type of bass cannon. That can improve bass, on a moderate amp.
then you could just use a piece of 6inch black plastic pipe and two car 3 way intergrated 6" speakers no porting required all the guts inside and the air flow created would cool the amp. run the mids and tweets stereo and the bass bins combined mono, by running out of phase they would create a push me pull you effect
The nice thing about this design is that you are using 100% of the driver energy, which is more than can be said for most speaker designs. It is also relatively easy to build. The downside is that it has resonant modes, and so the frequency response will not be flat. Fortunately the human ear is not very sensitive to non-flat frequency responses at the low end. So while the cannon isn't great for a general purpose speaker, it makes an efficient, powerful, and easy to build subwoofer.

Bass tubes have been around for years for cars, early 90's they first appeared. They tend to lack punch, though modern drivers may have over come this.
Thing is this if you make something which truly does go down low you hit many hurdles for it to work properly, you need a powerful amp to control the driver. Secondly regardless of using a digital amp you will be using a hell of a lot of power and for little in the way of return in real world volume.

Anything worthwhile on speakerplans 12v section? Amp wise I would be using tripath boards off eBay, ta2020 or ta2024. I'd build it mono, stereo is a waste of time in these small enclosures.

I don't think it would work very well as the speaker wired out of phase would probably start to.bottom out and destroy the coil former and then burn out, the diaphragm has to move forward when producing the sound but your idea it would be moving backwards
I built this.
Used a cheap amp from eBay and a rechargeable 12v battery. It plays for around 10hours.
I had the case but had to buy some second hand speakers.
I think it cost around £40 all in but that would depend on speakers.
As its 12volt you can also put a socket in to charge your phone.
