Pointing looks eroded. Was the wall built in lime? Lime is a handy system that keeps the bricks dry and reduces spalling. You do need to repoint every 100 years but if you forget to do that then the bricks can be cleaned up and used again. You can get NHL 3.5 from builders merchants. Shame to ruin it with more cement.

Quotes are mad the last couple of years. I'm doing my own partial rewire at the moment as I would need to do a few months work to cover the 10K quoted and I think it'll take a couple of weeks for me to do the work. For bricks 1K probably isn't unreasonable. It would take me more than 3 days to finish that wall. But it would end up beautiful.

I built my own wall (another 10K quote). That took ages.

Yep, learned this to my cost. Please don't use it.

The mortar mix leads us into another modern problem that cannot be seen on job completion. Brickwork optimum quality is 4 sand 1 cement and blockwork is 6 sand 1 cement. The trend is towards premix in big bath tub size containers with a 3 day shelf life. If building a cavity wall then two different tubs is an awful lot of muck to use so i do wonder if they use one or the other. The last builder i used said they just split the difference at 5 and 1.

Also your mortar looks too dry and possibly strong which will make it hard to work

Additionally when you lay the brick cut the excess mortar with the trowel but don't point it until it's stiffened up

Keep going, at that rate its only going to take 44 days, so it'll be done before the summer gets here.

As @mtt.tr says, don't try pointing it until its started going off, then just touch it up with a pointing trolley and brush it off with a soft brush and it'll look lovely.

If you don't have a pointing trolley but just happen to have an old metal bucket the handle makes a perfect pointing tool. Must be half round in cross section.

I would go for other quotes today that way if they want to view they have the weekend while they are free plus more quotes is better

I did as you suggested the other night and got one response only! He popped round last night for a look and sent through his quote today, £750 cash. Another joker.

I'm not going to do any more today as mixing the mortar is a pita, I'll hire a small mixer on Monday.

If your doing the patio it would make sense to buy a mixer? sell it on after?

That's what I did but I still have it...

i can assure you that you can mix in a wheel barrow with that hoe

i just cut 3mm steel sheet into 2 made the circles and rewelded them together you can use a hole saw to do the same

then i attached it to a handle and was away



that tool mixed 1 1/2 ton ballast of concrete in a wheel barrow and then another 2 1/2 ton concrete ballast to lay the foundation on a drive with 6 bags of cement per bag of ballast

then it mixed up the cement on rear garage wall and ive used it in more places just mixing cement and no back ache afterwards
