I thought I might enjoy this but it is so irritating. These clowns don’t do anything right that i can see.

They over pay for the stuff in the first place, spend a ton of cash doing stuff quite badly, well let’s say mediocre to be kind. They buy the wrong stuff as well, and never seem to study their market before launching into throw money at it.

I mean, 30 clap for a Capri 1.6 Laser. Not even a desirable model and they sunk 30 grand into it. It made 17 at the sale. Anyone could have seen that coming.

Then restoring a crappy old dumper to the tune of 6 grand. It was never going to make that back and I reckon it did well to make 2 ish.

MGB, over 12 grand, it made 10. Just laughable really. Where was the market research for the expected sale price? It was always 10 for a really nice one. They over paid for it, then threw another 4500 at it in parts and labour.

I just don’t get it. You make your profit when you buy, not from throwing money at it. Weird.

I don't watch any of the british car programs, they're all kind of a bit rubbish.Mind you most of the american ones are also rubbish just not as bad. Do like the kindig it designs one at the moment.

Tis the tv companies objective to profit,like a lot of tv nowadays,cheap entertainment,no professional actors to employ,just joe public and mostly carried out on an already established location,so no need for a stage or props,there supplied by the featured.
Besides,now Sarah’s gone I’ve lost interest.

Bangers & Cash is good viewing with the seller, auction and buyer as well as the car itself and the family dynamics.
Bangers & Cash - Restoring Cars is such a let down. Very little details on the restoration and as others have said ridiculous amounts spent on them to make any kind of profit. It seems like it’s the producers idea and they’re driving the show with the auction to tie it all in.

A let down, yes. Big style. But I don't understand why they even decided to make the programme to be honest. No detail on the repairs, but despite all the advice on offer from the B&C staff they still can't even come close to getting it right.

That MGB was a really good case in point. When done, unless it's a full nut and bolt rebuild, it's a useable daily car in decent condition which tops out at 10k for such a thing. If they want to make more it needs to be done to a better standard. So 10k sale price, less the profit margin and risk margin (which goes with an auction sale) becomes 8k max spending limit. It's going to need 3k for the repairs (parts AND labour), so that leaves an absolute max of 5k on the initial car. Personally I thought that one was 3.5k as it stood before the auctioneer talked the price up. It looked tired and had mechanical issues. So why can't they get their heads round the basic stuff? It really is a pointless programme. Should have gone to bed an hour earlier I think cos it's not even funny, it's just a handful of muppets who know nothing about the motor trade.

The original programme I like because of the interest in some of the old crocks. They have some really interesting old vehicles. But this spin off is a load of rubbish.

What a joke, the car ought to have been scrapped and the money put to better use….

Yes, it's an odd show. As said by the OP, they over pay at auction and then farm out the work to specialists. At the end they have a car that looks great but hasn't added anywhere near what they have spent. And they sell it at auction where people usually aren't prepared to pay top whack.

The way to turn a profit is by doing all the work yourself or by restoring top end cars. Paying someone minimum £40 plus an hour, plus vat, to restore your bog standard classic car isn't going to make economic sense. Henry Cole on Shed and Buried has a better business model - buy a cheap motorbike, get it running, clean and fettle it a bit, then sell on for a small profit.

The only way they don't lose even more money is when they give the vehicles to amateur restorers to do - like the 2 old guys who did the motor bike and the father and son who did the MG. And only because they undercharge on the labour.

I can see that the purpose is to showcase the work of restorers but the profit element makes it a bit laughable.

It's no worse than Lazy Boy Garage though. They import some bog standard undesirable LHD car from Europe, do it up, then have a weird little fixed auction in the yard where they end up making a loss. That was a truly pointless show.

I have a subscription to Motortrend on Amazon and of the several dozen car series on it I can only watch about four, the rest are just over-dramatised dross. I can tell from the first ten minutes that they are unwatchable. Over loud voices, fake anger, badly done drama.....

Kidig designs is pretty good, I think I've watched most of them.

Roadkill, Roadkill Garage, Engine Masters, Faster with Finnigan, can't think of any more I've fully watched.

likewise - basically stopped watching car programs on the telly as none were worth it. Goblin Works was terrible - lots of posturing but very little actual work. Kindig it I still like but thats about it. YouTube is the best place now, I've found. Take a look as Retropower and Bad Obsession. Significantly better content and technically free. The Late Brake Show is often worth a watch too, again on YouTube.

The trouble with most of these shows is that they all have scripted manufactured drama. That old show with Bernie and the Canadian guy was full of it. Gas Monkey garage went the same way.

I agree Kindig Customs aka Bitchin' Rides is one of the better ones. I've been binge watching it from on demand and it's 95% about the cars. Loads on the techniques of bodywork and upholstery too.

I still quite like Car SOS but can do without the 'Tim bags free stuff again' bits.

There is also that Vintage Volts job......Who in their right mind,wants to drive a milk float, would swap out a perfectly good engine for an electric makeover costing more than yer average family car new? Idjits I tell yer...

I just tried to watch 'Redline Racing', about tuning compact cars and imports. It sounded promising, but as soon as it got going it was lots of excited hypo guys, lots of high speed excited chatter, lots of talk about all the parts they had bolted on, and cameramen who couldn't stop from zooming in and out and waving their cameras around so fast your eyes blurred. Then the arguments and willy waving started..........

Did they overnight parts from Japan and fit it with a full MoTec system exhaust?
