Bangers and cash - restoring cars

Part of the issue is that in order to widen the appeal beyond car fans they manufacture drama, catastrophes during the restoration, rows amongst the staff, and build the tv show around 'characters' instead of the cars.

That annoys me (it really used to wind me up in "American Hotrod") but I don't recall seeing much of this in B&C.

I remember watching one instalment where Fuzz had been doing some welding, I thought I would have done a neater job.....

Lol. There was definitely a scene once where he was welding a patch near the windscreen (can't recall the car) and it was an absolute dog's dinner.

Well last nights was much the same. The Lotus didn't need paint so they were lucky there or it could have been a big loss. The new owner got a nice car for the money.

They also bought an old wooden ride on train - a Leeway Flyer. Then ruined it by having it 'restored' by adding new bits, painting it a totally unoriginal colour, and paying £250 for a sign writer to paint a name on the side. Am I the only one who thought the whole thing looked terrible?

No, but the couple who bought it to amuse their Grandchildren seemed happy to have forked out a silly amount of money....

Only if they needed to. About this time last year I was in that neighbourhood. Time flies.

There’s a fantastic series on YT with some Japanese restrorers. All in Japanese - some with subtitles but it simply records them doing restoration. Nothing else. A little worrying the amount of rust they find and cut out … but makes for good watching !

Henry Cole on Shed and Buried has a better business model - buy a cheap motorbike, get it running, clean and fettle it a bit, then sell on for a small profit.

Must admit I started off finding Henry Cole irritating but he's such an enthusiast that he's grown on me. I'm currently catching up on his motorbike show - and I don't even really like bikes. I like his mate Sam a lot - him and those other 2 oddballs, Alan Millyard (?) and the other bloke who always wears 3 layers and a jacket, seem to know their engineering stuff. Genuine bike buffs and I really enjoy the fettling of old bikes.

Well yeah, there is that. When he does his adding up of profit after a day selling bits at an auto jumble he doesn't take into account that the 3 of them spent days fettling and cleaning the stuff and 5 hours on a stall selling it lol. What's mad is how much people will pay for a really rusty and boring old auto related sign.

It does make me question the reality of the sums involved. But who cares it's only moving wallpaper.

I just watched an episode of Iron Resurrection on Prime, and it was surprisingly palatable. No real drama, no fights, they made mistakes, had issues with things not fitting, which is normal with custom build, but nobody shouted, there was no stupid 7 day deadline to build a AMBR type car. I'm impressed.

As a car anorak i need a car show that is indepth with no drama or side stories about the crew, i think it would just be better if i got into my own projects and watched less TV

If I put as much time and effort in to my project car as I do in to watching cars being restored on TV, and looking on ebay for bits for mine that I don't really need, I would have finished it and restored 4 more by now. Tv and the net are such thieves of time.
