Another blow to classic car drivers

I used to do a loads of work in London in the late 80s/90s and it was hard work then with the parking and stuff, could do Luton to Paddington in about 40mins though!
I did supply 3 Vauxhall cars for a film shoot in Soho about 8 yrs ago and it was a hatefull experience then.
Wont be going back ever and certainly not in a classic, let the place burn

"It was initially feared that the introduction of the ULEZ would effectively ban classics from central London – causing havoc for owners who live in the area and possibly even leading to the cancellation of some classic events such as the London to Brighton Run.
Fortunately, following a campaign by Classic & Sports Car, among others, the decision was made to grant exemption to historic vehicles.
What this means in practical terms is that if your classic is more than 40 years old and is registered for the historic vehicle tax class, you will not need to pay the ULEZ charge.
It’ll work the same way as the new MoT rules introduced last year, which takes the cut-off date as exactly 40 years on a rolling basis."

If you have a Classic its not an issue...
If you have a "Modern Classic" ...

Simple answer is never, ever, under any circumstances go inside the M25.

Birmingham and Bristol are not allowing an exemption to Historic Vehicles.
Edinburgh the situation is unclear if they are or aren't allowing an exemption.

Vote with your money,
don't spend it in these places.

Historic vehicles are exempt from charge in all the ULEZ zones. I was having a look the other day at Birmingham for the motorbikes and they all have exemption, even the two-stroke that leaves a nice blue trail behind it.

Not that I have any need or desire to go into the centre of Birmingham, just nice to know I have to option to do so without charge. When you consider that exemption, along with the road tax, no MOT test and cheap insurance I can see classic car and bike prices climbing even sharper over the next year or two.

Just checked on the Gov't site for the Bath and Birmingham ULEZ zones here and it's exempt. Go to the TFL one and it isn't. I can't say I'm surprised that the left hand doesn't know what the right's up to.

I moved to Birmingham from the Black Country about 20 years ago so have a different accent to a Brummie

Oddly enough we had a family friend in the 70's who was a language student, he said I had the least noticeable accent out of 5 of us.

Black Country accent seems to be one that is still pretty strong and undiluted today, I always liked it when my kids played Stourbridge at rugby. When they came to us they were always really good fun and when we were short of players they loaned one of their star players and he played properly for us and set up 3-4 tries. It's such a unique dialect.

They have put another 50mph speed limit just past Port Talbot on the M4 to cut down emissions. Funny how they blame cars with the stink coming from the steel works!
And what about electric cars? Do they have to stick to the limit as well?

I drive from the first Newport junction to Cardiff and Swansea on a regular basis and it is so easy to forget about those 50mph limits. I love the fact it's for emissions yet they have 100s of signs lit up like xmas trees to tell you it's 50mph so using loads more energy than they did before. You can come through in the early hours sometimes and not see another car.

If you are turning off to head into Swansea once you pass the last but one camera you can floor it. The last camera is after the junction!
Apparently these cameras aren't live yet. I think they are afraid they will be challenged in court. As I said what if you are driving an electric car? Also some cars are more efficient at 60 than 50 for example.

Fortunately the only time I do the stretch from Cardiff to Swansea is if I have a job in both places in one day. Normally when I go to Swansea I go Heads Of The Valley and I'll be glad when they finish all that roadworks but I'll bet they put average speed cameras on there too as they already have them around Merthyr

It seems every time I have an evening job in Cardiff they shut one of the tunnels, if it's east bound they put the M4 speed down to 30 something stupid like 3 miles out and then bizarrely back to 40 as you approach the junction. Still seems to be loads of people sailing past at normal speeds

I live in the U-LEZ zone and I think this is going to be so bad for south london past south circular, they are going to be swamped with parked cars.

It's got very little to do with saving the planet more to do with making MONEY. They shut all the camera's down locally a few years ago because the gov was keeping all the fines and the operators weren't.
