Pedals are great for bench work and great if your already a competent welder 
They are not great for learning to do things properly and the original posts I put up in the guide were all written around using a torch switch.
Your filler, your arc length and your travel speed are all your friends for maintaining control of the pool. You don’t need a pedal even if they are a nice luxury sometimes.
