This nearly went in Projects as its turning into one!
The wife's old Pug 206 1.4i, year 2000 with 120,000 on the clock. It's had a front end cosmetic prang and is tbh a mud magnet down our roads as well as eating suspension components and wheel bearings with all the pot holes. However, No.1 son just passed his test so figured it a good candidate for a first car that he can trash down the tight lanes for a bit then get him something half decent.
First thing is, and the main reason for the thread is the annoying whine it has. We were just accepting that but after finishing tidying it up it's become a bit of an obsession to find this damn noise!
The tidy up started off as replacing the radiator...£400 'ish in parts later. We've done:
Rad
Thermostat × 2
Expansion bottle cap × 2
O rings (as the old cap now back on)
Heater matrix
Water pump
Timing belt
Head gasket and bolts
Both front drive shafts and oil seals
NSF hub and wheel bearing
NSF brake hose
NSR wheel cylinder and shoes
Both front wishbone
PAS pump
Pullies 58 and 60
The auxilliary belt I've not changed just now, it's done about 10,000 miles. It's a 1564mm rather than the Service Box 1563mm but I can't see 1mm making that much difference. It made anyway the noise beforehand.
Back to this noise, 4 video clips. I've not yet touched the alternator or pulley on the end of the AC compressor!
When idling it sounds like this with an underlying whine. Rev it and the whine varies:
flic.kr/p/2ie88Vk
When idling, if you spray around the PAS pump with water which has the alternator and ac compressor below, the whine stops:
flic.kr/p/2ie86gh
As it dries out (I guess) the whine builds back up, squeals a bit then goes back to the usual constant whine:
flic.kr/p/2ie83TG
If I then turn the wheel to full lock the whine stops but as it happens there's a little squeal and a "pshhh" noise. At 13 secs in I reach full left lock and jiggle it bit on and off. Then I put it on full right lock at 27 secs in and do the same:
flic.kr/p/2iebmZE
The steering rack maybe?
Any ideas? I'd love to cure this noise once and for all.
