A question for the drillbitists

Mercs arent bad trucks, though their dealers do tend to be all posh out the front and bit of a dump out the back!

Well i spoke to a guy there who told me they had a program for people switching from light to heavy vehicles. Sounded perfect. Then i couldn't get hold of him, didn't answer my calls, etc. I gave up.

The Merc job i saw is with Motus. I know one of their dealers, but haven't seen the workshop properly. I did my Class 2 in an 18T Antos, it was a very nice truck.

Maybe have a go at working for Mercedes for a while and then you will have that on your CV and then you could try some other places?
In my eyes a wrecker driver could be a very handy guy to have in a truck workshop

I would of but the little hit went awol and the second set of dics were on back order so I couldnt smash the last two off the hubs in case the new ones never showed up.

Anyway, a big thank you to all the drillbitists for all the advice, I will never cheap out on drill bits ever again :thumbup:

I bought some cobalt drills from my local nutnboltist and with the aide of a jig managed to drill them all out. They are a tad brittle and I did snap a few off but did get there in the end, took about an hour per hub.

Just need to find a big lump of round to make a pressing tool to push in the reluctor rings.

There is a proper tool, but I have always used a copper hammer, to tap the inner edge of the pulse ring round and round until the tone changes when its fully seated.
The proper tool is a machined round disc of nylon that you locate into the centre of the pulse ring and smack with a large hammer.

I have found a bit of ali thats about 15mm thick, I will spin something up on the lathe and press them in. The old reluctor ring had been rubbing on the sensor, I would imagine thats a result of the old one being badly smashed home and buckeled with a hammer.

I've installed a few of those with a lump of wood, when we've not had the correct tool.

While you've got the disc off, check the ABS sensor still slides in it's hole.
You should be able to push it with moderate pressure. If it doesn't move, I'd consider hammering it out, cleaning the hole, and fitting new ones while the hub is off.
There's nothing worse to find the air gap is too large/too small after re-fitting the hub, and you then have to either remove the hub again, or faff about trying to extract the ABS sensor from the back and clean the hole out.

Could always use that drilling jig plate and stick it in the press if you're that worried.

I've always fitted ABS rings and the like with a nylon hammer.

You have to tap it home gingerly
I have literally done hundreds of them
Once the hub nut is torqued up I always spin the hub and see how much run out is between the pulse ring and the sensor normally spot on occasionally .5 mm wibble wobble but that is well within tolerance
We always fit a new sensor and sensor cage doing rear discs as 99 times out of 100 it is seized solid in the axle
Front sensors normally move so can go again

Every lorry yard near us - have signs outside advertising for vacancies.

£47k - that will be nights I would think? - bet we are talking Mon to Thurs - 4x 10hr nights

Almost certainly, I think most mechanics are underpaid but my recent experience suggests that they do the same job 3 times before fixing it.

A decent mobile truck/plant fitter with a van heaving with kit does well if he knows his stuff,I pay about £90 an hour plus parts for the guy that signs off our PMI`s.

I'm talking generic mechanics but I think pay is low as quality is low, someone who's good is worth that all day long.

Thats because most of them are only fitters as opposed to mechanical engineers.

We are on the same point, I'm just being diplomatic due to current situation but suffice to say I'm ****** of over the state of most trades.

When someone can diagnose something first time in quick time and knows how install said parts is paid the same as the person who turns up multiple times keeps changing the wrong parts and isn't interested to learn. Problem is the latter out numbers the former.

I would laugh, but with the last guys my work employed, that's pretty accurate.
