A few random stainless jobs

Quick job this morning, a simple guard to fit round a fire alarm point that keeps getting swiped of the wall by people moving stacks of cartons with pallet trucks,

Then assemble a barrier also to protect a machine from pallet truck vandals, for a different customer the material was supplied all cut to size, I'll have to get one of those poundshop squares they must be using, also its a good example of why stainless should be stored separate to mild steel

Worked a bit of magic on it and it came out ok in the end, its over two metres long, and one and a half metres high

Little guards look great Paul with that double fold.
Anyone could slap a right angled frame thing over it to do the same job but it's nice to see quality made parts doing the the job. Did you get many of them to do.

Just wire brushed and dry scotchbrite on the barrier, its not in a food environment, the alarm guard was polished up with a flapwheel on the bench polisher, that is a food factory job.

The deburr on the fixing holes, although never seen when in position, is a nice finishing touch. Do you use a countersink or a Noga type?

Just a countersink bit, raw edges on holes and the edges of lasercuts is a pet hate of mine, corners always get radiused as well, it only takes a few seconds to clean them up so why not do it properly, swirly grinding disc marks are also a no no on my jobs,

We do this on 'food' jobs - saves snagging cloths, mops etc. Nice job Paul.

I feel exactly the same about all those things. If it can't be finished properly it shouldn't be started. Another pet hate of mine is seeing badly finished mitres where people have tried to regrain across the mitred joint instead of covering half and following the original grain. That just looks awful imo and down to laziness.

It's very easy to do. Just requires care and the difference is between a quality and an ugly corner.
I saw a load of em at stansted air port other week L brackets holding the Estops for the baggage belts. All stainless box all mitred and all done with the grain re scratched over the mitre. I bet I was the only person stood there deeply appalled by this waiting for my bag.
I was half inclined to write to them and ask them if they wanted them finishing properly

Fully agree with doing it right as long as the price is in it - few can afford to " over work" a job that might not be very profitable to begin with. If the money is right though...

Dont worry your not the only one,
If you get dragged around shops to often by the other half, once in the shop start looking at the weld quality on all the shop fittings and hanging rails, you wont get dragged round the shops much after a that.

I know who did a lot of that airport stuff, the price was cut to the bone and the problems of getting people security checked to work in airports was a nightmare, company is no more unfortunately.

Yes I can imagine it been a real pita when it come to installation.
I'm very picky when it comes to the visual appearance of the things that I make.
I understand in an airport with a thousand mitres to do getting every one pucca would be enough to kill the profit.
I made a harness support out of SS for a 350Z end of June and although it went out at a premium price after I'd finished every joint, bend, hole and radius to the standard I was happy the hourly rate wasn't that great. I still wouldn't of sent it out any different to save time. But that's the luxury of doing it as a side line I guess.

Its surprising how many priced jobs you do were you think you have a good margin turn out into minimum wage or worse and how many " shouldn't go this low" jobs turn out great

The thing is you must always stand on your price if you have given one and if you can't earn from it learn from it

Your correct in doing that Richard it's not the customers fault when too low a price is issued by the seller

Knocked this up today, a small handrail to go up some steps at a building entrance, its 2" stainless tube, used a pre formed bend, first joint made and cleaned off

joint 2, weld is appearance unimportant as its coming off but need to not have low spots that will appear when polishing, so concentrated on getting a full profile bead

And polished out

A coped out joint for the vertical leg, the angle is 110deg, marked the cut line with dot marks, me eyes aint what they were... the dots disappear when its welded.

And a pressed end cap welded on for the bottom of the rail, and a plate to fix to the wall at the top

Finished, not the easiest thing to photograph but you'll get the idea, the leg will be concreted in the ground by about 400mm

Makes all the difference in quality dishing the end cap slightly. Much better than a flat end.

You need to chuck some Polinox around a bit further - get rid of the foliage

Its a bit too expensive for use as weed killer, I think these are special council weeds, nothing seems to kill them, they just wither a bit then come back even stronger, might nuke them with a blowtorch see what that does,

I think they look great. I press em out in the vice with a rounded off chunk I ground up a while back for some. I've not pressed them out off SS before mind. Lots of Alu ones and steel which form easy in the vice with a block and former.
