I take my hat off to anyone who moves big machinery like this. I ****** my pants with fear when I was moving my piddly little Harrison Mill.
Having said that, at work I regularly see assemblies weighing many hundreds to many thousands of tons being lifted and shifted.
I have a healthy respect for all lifting equipment. A few years ago now I was working at a yard in France when I saw a very, very large crane indeed (made by NOV) billed as "the largest crane in Europe" (of course with respect to all the other largest cranes in Europe) collapse. The jib came crashing down on top of a truck and a large mobile compressor, destroying both. It also totalled some very expensive big machinery in the yard nearby and damaged the ship I was on. I will never forget the sound it made. All it was doing was lifting a few big sheets of treadplate. Maybe a 1/4 of a ton, but in terms of it's capacity, nothing.
I remember hearing about the huge crane in America lifting in sections of steelwork on a football stadium, when it came crashing down. Apparently the lift engineers had worked out everything, but the wind. The wind blowing on the crane itself was enough to push it over.
Never big herberts but King dicks is another storyI've worked with a few big herberts in my time.
Was wondering when health and safety would show faceCan we assume (from to non-reply and a ’like’ to a sbsequent post) that the fork lift was operating outside its design/safety limits?
Forty years ago, someone, who was not so clever, lifted off a too-heavy part with one of the works‘ cranes.
He managed to free-spool the load as the crane jib buckled. But that little episode cost a great deal - both the crane and the very expensive part (that was bent and buckled such that it was irreparable) were written off.
Overloading on modern kit is no longer possible, by the use of load cells etc which will refuse to operate above the safety limit for the machine.
Well and needed said........that the person is capable of knowing what his forklift is capable of and how?
I'm all for health and safety, don't get me wrong, I'm a professional. But the recent crusades on this forum in the name of H&S is really getting my back up. It's always when no-one knows the full picture, too.
Nah, let's just assume that everyone is an incompetent child... I mean, what sort of attitude is that![]()
Your hijacking the thread .... the planer is much more interesting to listen and read about ...The man knew/knows what he was doingSorry! I thought this might apply - just a matter of 20% overloaded? Or was that a larger forklift?
Yesterday by Pressbrake: ‘Had a lump in the throat moment unloading 12ton!”

If you get bored metalbothering you could make a living as a philosopher Clive. Hmmmm....I watched a lecture by a professor of physiology.
Social media has given rise to a phenomenon of people trying to out people for anything from non wokeness to perceived breaches of safety and everything in between
I was accused in a passive way of incompetence especially when sarcastically saying I was only 20% over when in fact it was a tandem lift and I actually had double required capacity.
The accuser had the pleasure of putting me down and making themselves seem more enlightened and intelligent.
There are things i would love to post and show my working days, but then think can i really be bothered explaining myself into extinction why i am still alive because i am leaning over a high ledge or parapet with a drill. There are times in this life when someone just genuinely knows what the hell they are doing with there own calculated risks without mindless interference from know all,s....ready for an ear bashing![]()
Not a new phenomena. Just more prevalent with social media.I watched a lecture by a professor of physiology.

On the subject of outing people, I had a discussion in the pub last night about this - we’re not very far away from pointing fingers at people for all kinds of earth damage - holidays abroad, eating meat, driving non scalextrix cars, motorsport, the list will be endless....

We’ve always had days with the ache , I’m slightly abrasive but now we have people doing it for pc points. The lecture is on YouTube somewhereHear that.

We are all guilty of it from time to time.
Bad day. Stressed and that frustration gets directed in the wrong direction.
We have self perceived righteousness now over everything. If you get bored metalbothering you could make a living as a philosopher Clive. Hmmmm....
