I take my hat off to anyone who moves big machinery like this. I ****** my pants with fear when I was moving my piddly little Harrison Mill.

Having said that, at work I regularly see assemblies weighing many hundreds to many thousands of tons being lifted and shifted.

I have a healthy respect for all lifting equipment. A few years ago now I was working at a yard in France when I saw a very, very large crane indeed (made by NOV) billed as "the largest crane in Europe" (of course with respect to all the other largest cranes in Europe) collapse. The jib came crashing down on top of a truck and a large mobile compressor, destroying both. It also totalled some very expensive big machinery in the yard nearby and damaged the ship I was on. I will never forget the sound it made. All it was doing was lifting a few big sheets of treadplate. Maybe a 1/4 of a ton, but in terms of it's capacity, nothing.

I remember hearing about the huge crane in America lifting in sections of steelwork on a football stadium, when it came crashing down. Apparently the lift engineers had worked out everything, but the wind. The wind blowing on the crane itself was enough to push it over.

People vastly under-estimate windage. Try holding a single sheet of plywood against even a moderate breeze and you would quickly gain some appreciation.
