No, on the open 90 kph Limit roads, I am often above the limit through the bendy bits, but on the limit on the straights in radar shoot territory, and on the limit in the 30/50/70 limits.

Time of day, road surface conditions etc are up to you what speed you do, the technology is not there yet to adjust speed limits to all times of day and conditions on all roads.

Of course, we are all such skilled riders/drivers on hera that the speed limits don't apply to us personally-just the other muppets on the road.

The first part of your original post was all good and relevant info, I just don't think the OP wanted a lecture on road safety (a whole other topic and something for another time and place). I don't think it came across well and didn't add anything to the debate, other than to get people's backs up.

It wasn't a lecture on road safety, it was an attempt to show the thinking behind the imposition of speed limits, and the thinking of some who find them over the top for the road sections they are applied to.

Most laws/regulations are imposed on the majority due to the actions of the minority.

One trick is not to infringe the imposed rules in the obvious places where the enforcers will be waiting. Which is why I am careful of my speed and where.

Go read the post, I was neither driving nor in the car. If you are going to be sanctimonious make sure you are correct and don't even bother if you are a hypocrite.

I did read the post thank you. The you bit was a generalisation, ie, if a person knows what a regulation is a and chooses not to comply with it, then its a personal choice and should not come as a suprise if the enforcers are about.

If you failed to notice the regulation and acted in ignorance its slightly different but most of us probaly know what the law says about that one.

The waffle was intended to show why the hand held devices are deployed, and why there is sometimes no follow up.

Its down to local pressure on the enforcers and the perception of speed (not accident statistics) by the residents.

The result is sometimes speed humps -seems to be on the increase- and the lowering of speed limits on the approaches to residential areas.

To sum up, they sometimes deploy the hand held device as a show, but often, there is no safe place to pull an errant driver over but job done because next time we/you/him/her/Joe Bloggs generalisation-get it, drive down there we/you/them/him/her/Joe Bloggs eases up.

My guess is it was maybe a community relations exercise and nowt will follow.

I got caught in February, 41mph in a 30 by a motorcycle cop with a handheld on a tripod. Didn't pull me over and about 10 days later recieved a NIP in the post, took the Speed Awareness option for £80 and no points.
No point pulling you over as they would miss the other 10 saps following you down the road at the same speed!

I can 100% confirm that they do 'do' people without stopping them, this happened very recently to someone I know.
I have also known it to be a warning letter not the fine and points, no idea how common this is (only known it happen once).

I always thought that dropping from NSL to 50mph in many places was a vain and possibly cynical attempt to meet O2 emmsions. Plenty of dual carriageways been built and 50mph imposed with no casualties recorded yet?

yup. the Road traffic act (Scotland) is virtually the same as in England

you usually get 10% plus 2 or 3 mph and the speedo will be 5ish over read. therefore approx 25 and no tug. the NIP is usually from vans or cameras. Plus under Scottish law there needs to be two coppers (corroboration)

This was discussed on my Speed Awareness course and a couple people there had been caught at 2 MPH over the limit!

Lots in north Bucks too, recorded speeds frequently used as statistics to justify further speed restrictions, etc., and yes, sadly and rather predictably oap 'busy bodies' are invariably involved. As an oap myself, I'm more than capable of recognising the type.

That doesn't seem fair, how accurate is the speedo in your car ?

As an example I recently did a round trip, the trip meter in my car said 70miles covered, Google maps says 76.2miles. Now I'm betting that Google is more accurate than it trip meter in my 39 year old car, so assuming my speedo also lies by 10% I would be done for speeding without knowingly breaking the speed limit.

I know ignorance is no defence as years ago me and a few mates were given a warning by a copper for speeding in a 30 zone on our push bikes, we'd been watching the Tour de France and were copying the way they rotate the work with each rider spending 25% at the front and the rest drafting.

We claimed we had no idea how fast we were going as non of us had a speedo on their bike, to which the copper replied "If your overtaking cars then your going too fast"

We did know that we were doing 42mph as we had a speedo but the guy quickly stuck it in his pocket when the copper flagged us down

The speedo's on a couple of my vehicles under read, I just allow for it by driving at an indicated 55mph when in a 60 zone, the other vehicle doesn't even like doing 60mph, I usually don't push it beyond 40.

I know the "my speedo is wrong" defence won't work and wouldn't waste my breath even trying it.

the 10% plus 2 has nothing to do with how accurate the speed cameras are.
car speedo in most case's aren't accurate at certain speeds.
my old punto was 3 mph under read and my current car ford focus is 2 mph over read.
so my car say I'm doing 30 and those flash speed things tide to lamp post say I'm doing 28 mph.

If your speed was no greater than 10% plus 2 above the limit, the police will almost certainly take no further action and so you will avoid prosecution altogether.

I plugged an ODB2 datalogger into my van, and whilst the speedo was over-reading the roadspeed output from ODB2 agreed exactly with my sat-nav speed readout.
