hand held speed gun

My wife says she was clocked by a plod with a hand held speed gun 7pm last night but was not pulled over, she thinks she was doing ~30 in a 20 zone.

Anyone have experience of getting a ticket without being pulled over with a hand held?

Yep they have to get a NIP to the registered keeper of the car within 14 days. If the car is registered to her and at her address, she's got to bite her nails for 14 days then she's home free.

it may not have been a speed gun. they have hand held anpr cameras now and are looking for un insurered or un taxes vehicles.

Locally they always pull you over as far as I am aware, is there a possibility it was one of the community speed checks? we have a few where the locals are trained to use the speed gun and supply details, you can get a warning letter from it but not a speeding fine.

NIP- notice in post ? When I got caught speeding 14 years ago, I received the letter 13 days after I was caught. I believe it's 14 days here too

Also are you sure the 20 is a definite 20, iirc if they are within a black border not red then it's an advisory speed limit?

Having done a bit of reading on the subject in the past it seems a bit of a mine field though.

Its usual to be pulled over AFAIK. I was always pulled over in UK (last time it cost them 5K quid coz he did it wrong and told me it was a Laser when it was a RADAR gun).

Sometimes, the reading jumps about and cannot be relied on so they let the target vehicle pass.

They sometimes get out and point the gun to appease residents (fair enuf-don't speed past other folks houses if you don't like folks speedin past yours).

Sometimes, they just record the averages to see if the speed limit is justified.

I never get pulled on my Harley with its LED headlight coz it fires a load of flashes up the road (but I'm in France and bikers are ok coz most cops are bikers)

I think there might be a few guns that can take speed and reg plate, but not many as they are pricey.

The thing to take away is:

a child can survive a 20mph hit better than a 30 mph hit, a 40 mph hit is often fatal.

Whats so urgent in your life that you need to speed.

Not many children running about in the road on tower bridge at three in the morning though are there? I got booked for 32 in a 20 there and I don't feel guilty about breaking that 20 limit, though I could have done without the points and fine tbh.

Surely you mean you never get pulled because you always obey the speed limit because there is nothing so urgent in your life that you need to speed?

So I'll agree with you that 20 and 30 speed limits are usually there for a reason, but that brings me onto ....

If you know the speed limit, why are you not complying with it?

because sometimes they are totally inappropriate, dropping a national speed limit (60) on a road that is straight with no pedestrians, no obstacles, no junctions etc down to 40 is in my opinion stupid and can be safely be ignored IF it's a dry day with good visibility.

Compared to some of the distracted morons who drive cars, a driver who is paying attention but speeding can be less of a hazard, but it's easier to generate money catching speeders than bad drivers.

I will agree with part of this- dropping a speed limit inappropriately. Local road in Cumbria was reduced from 60 to 50 due to the amount of boy racer wrapping themselves round trees. Did it work? No because they weren't driving at 60 in the first place, and all it meant was that they are an extra 10mph over the speed limit nowadays when they die

yup. the Road traffic act (Scotland) is virtually the same as in England

you usually get 10% plus 2 or 3 mph and the speedo will be 5ish over read. therefore approx 25 and no tug. the NIP is usually from vans or cameras. Plus under Scottish law there needs to be two coppers (corroboration)

No, on the open 90 kph Limit roads, I am often above the limit through the bendy bits, but on the limit on the straights in radar shoot territory, and on the limit in the 30/50/70 limits.

Time of day, road surface conditions etc are up to you what speed you do, the technology is not there yet to adjust speed limits to all times of day and conditions on all roads.

Of course, we are all such skilled riders/drivers on hera that the speed limits don't apply to us personally-just the other muppets on the road.
